To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK ULAR Mo- GILVRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carlock, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of swinging gates, more especially the means for opening and closing the same, and to provide simple, eihcient and comparatively inexpensive operating mechanism, adapted to enable a gate to be opened and closed at a distance from either side of it and without dismounting from ahorse or leaving a vehicle, and capable of holding the gate in its open position and of positively locking the same in its closed position and of preventing cattle from interfering with the operating mechanism and opening the gate.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the spring for engaging the combined gate actuating and locking levers. Fig. 6 is a detail view, illustrating the construction of the inner pivotally connected ends of the gate actuating and locking bars or members.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a swinging gate, pivotally mounted at a point intermediate of its ends between upper and lower arms 2 and 3, extending horizontally from a hinge post 4 and provided with alined eyes or openings for the reception of a vertical pintle 5, which pierces the top and bottom bars of the frame of the gate. The frame of the gate is oblong and is preferably constructed of flanged metal T-shaped in cross section, but any other form of flanged metal, such as angles or channel bars, may be employed in the construction of the frame of the gate. The gate is braced by an inclined diagonally arranged bar 6, and the body portion of the gate is formed by horizontal wires 7, suitably connected at their terminals to the vertical end bars of the frame of the gate.
The rear end of the gate extends beyond the vertical pivot 5 and carries an approximately U-shaped bearing bracket 8, bolted or otherwise secured to the frame of the gate and having upper and lower horizontally projecting arms provided with alined bearing openings for the reception of terminals 9 of a vertical pivot 10. The vertical pivot 10 has its end portions journaled in the bearing openings of the arms of the bracket 8, and it is connected to the outer end of one of a pair of combined gate actuating and locking bars or members 11 and 12. The bar or member 11 is preferably composed of spaced side plates 13 and a wooden filler piece 14 to which the side plates are secured by transverse rivets 15, or other suitable fastening devices. The side plates 13 are extended atthe outer end of the bar or member 12 to provide a pair of projecting ears 16, spaced apart to receive the vertical pivot 10 and connected therewith by a horizontal pivot 17 which connects the outer end of the bar or member 11 with the gate. The other bar or member 12 is also composed of spaced side plates 18 and a wooden filler piece 19. The side plates 13 and 18 project beyond the inner ends of the filler pieces 14 and 19, and they are overlapped and pivotally connected by a transverse pintle 20, located near the lower edges of the side plates, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the wooden filler pieces 14 and 19 are cut away at 21 to provide a recess for the pintle 20 and have abutting inner end portions 22 above the pivot to limit the downward swinging movement of the bars or members.
The side plates 18 are extended at the outer end of the bar or member 12 to pro vide spaced ears or portions 23 arranged at opposite sides of a vertical pivot 24 and connected with the same by a horizontal pivot 25. The horizontal pivot 25 is provided with terminal journals 26, which are mounted in upper and lower projecting ears or hinge elements 27, having vertically alined openings to receive the journals 26. The cars or hinge elements 27 are provided with shanks, which pierce an intermediate upright 28, being secured to the same by nuts 29, which engage threaded terminal portions of the shanks of the ears 27. The transverse pivot 25 supports a spring 30, constructed of a single piece of wire doubled to form two sides, which are coiled intermediate of their ends to provide spaced eyes 31. The eyes 31 are arranged on the horizontal pivot 25, and the side portions of the spring are bent by coiling the eyes to form angularly related arms 32 and 33. The arm 32 is ap proximately U-shaped and extends between the terminal port-ions or ears 23 of the side plates 18 and bears against the wooden filler piece 19. The other arm 33 of the spring is engaged with the vertical pivot 24, the terminal portions 34 of the wire being bent into approximately U-shape or hook-shape to engage with the said pivot 24, as shown. The spring 30 is flexed by the upward swinging of the bar or member 12, and tends to return the same to a horizontal position.
The intermediate horizontal pivot 20 is extended laterally beyond the bars or members 11 and 12, and the projecting terminal portions of the pivot 20 extend through eyes 35 of an approximately Usl1aped yoke 36, straddling the bars or members 11 and 12 and connected by a wire rope 37, or other suitable connection with an intermediate lever 38. The intermediate lever 38, which may be constructed of rod metal, or other suitable material, consists of an approximately U-shaped arm 39 and upwardly and downwardly extending arms 40 and 41. The metal of the intermediate lever is coiled at opposite sides of the Ushaped arm 39 to form eyes 42 for the reception of a pivot 43, which secures the lever to the upper end of the upright 28. The arms 40 and 41, which are arranged at an angle to the arm 39,are provided with terminal eyes 44 and 45 to which are connected wire ropes 46 and 47, or other suitable flexible connections, extending in opposite directions from the lever 38 to guide pulleys 48 of brackets 49. The brackets 49, which are mounted on uprights 50, are constructed of suitable metal and consist of a downwardly extending arm 51 and an inclined brace 52. The arm 51 is provided at its terminals with eyes 53 and 54; the upper eye 53 receives a fastening device for securing the arm to the upper end of the post or upright 50, and the lower eye 54 is connected with the pulley 48. The brace 50, which is approximately U-shaped, is provided at its outer end with an eye 55 through which the arm passes, and the lower ends of the sides of the brace 52 are provided with eyes 56 for the reception of a fastening device for securing the brace to the post or upright 50.
The terminals of the operating cords or ropes 46 and 47 are provided with handles 57 of suflicient weight to cause them to hang in a perpendicular posit-ion, and when either of the operating ropes is pulled the inner hinged ends of the bars or members 11 and 12 will be swung upward, thereby oscillating the gate and causing the same to swing to and from posts 58 and 59. As the bars or members when in a horizontal position form a lock for holding the gate in either its open or closed position it is necessary to employ latches for that purpose, and in order to prevent the operating mechanism from being affected by cattle, or other stock, a lower horizontal guard 60 is arranged beneath the bars or members 11 and 12 when the gate is in its closed position. The guard 60, which is constructed of wood, or other suitable material, preferably fills the space between the ground and the bars or members 11 and 12, and it prevents an animal from getting be neath and lifting the gate actuating bars or members.
A vertical shield 61 is also arranged adjacent to the upright connection 37 to prevent the same from being moved from one side to the other by stock. The shield, which consists of a plate or board, is secured to a short post or upright 62, and it extends forwardly from the latter and is arranged contiguous to the connection 37 when the gate is in its closed position, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Either operating rope is adapted to be pulled to open the gate, and when it is pulled it lifts the gate actuating members and oscillates the gate. The momentum of the gate carries the same beyond a central position, and together with the action of the spring completes the opening and closing movements. One of the operating ropes is pulled to open the gate, and after passing through the gate-way the other operating rope is pulled to close the gate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a swinging gate, of a pair of approximately horizontal gate actuating members pivoted together at their one of the members being connected to the gate and the other to a fixed support, operating mechanism connected with the pivoted members for swinging the same upward to actuate the gate, a fixed gnard arranged adjacent to the pivoted members to prevent the same from being swung upward by stock.
2. The combination with a swinging gate, of a pair of approximately horizontal gate actuating members pivoted together at their inner ends, one of the members being connected to the gate and the other to a fixed support, operating mechanism connected with the pivoted members for swinging the same upward to actuate the gate, and a fixed horizontal guard located beneath the pivoted members and filling the space between the same and the ground to prevent the said members from being swung upward by stock.
3. The combination with a swinging gate, of spaced vertical pivots, one of the pivots being carried by the gate and the other being mounted in fixed supports, a pair of gate actuating members pivoted together at one end and pivotally connected at their other ends by the said vertical pivots and arranged to swin upwardly and downwardly, operating mec anism connected with the gate actuating members, and a fixed guard arranged beneath the said members in the inner ends,
vertical plane of the same for preventing the said members from being swung upward by stock.
4. The combination with a swinging gate, of a pair of approximately horizontal gate actuating members pivoted together at their inner ends, one of the members being connected to the gate and the other to a fixed support, operating mechanism including an upright connection extending to and connected with the said members, and a shield arranged adjacent to and extending along the upright connection to prevent the same from being moved by stock.
5. The combination with a swinging gate, of a pair of approximately horizontal gate actuating members pivoted together at their inner ends, one of the members being connected to the gate and the other to a fixed support, operating mechanism including an upright connection extending to and connected with the said members, and a support arranged adjacent to the upright connection, and a shield consisting of a plate mounted on the support and arranged at one side of and extending along the upright connection to prevent the same from being moved by stock.
6. The combination with a swinging gate, of spaced vertical pivots, one of the pivots being mounted on the gate and the other in fixed supports, approximately horizontal gate actuating members fitted together at one end and provided with spaced side plates, a transverse pivot connecting the inner ends of the side plates, horizontal pivots connect-ing the outer ends of the side plates to the said vertical pivots, a spring provided with angularly related arms engaging one of the vertical pivots and the adjacent gate actuating member for swinging the same downward, said spring being also provided with eyes mounted on one of the said horizontal pivots, and actuating mechanism connected with the said members for swinging the same upward.
7. The combination with a swinging gate, of spaced vertical pivots, one of the pivots being mounted on the gate and the other in fixed supports, approximately horizontal gate actuating members fitted together at one end and provided with spaced side plates, a transverse pivot connecting the inner ends of the side plates, horizontal pivots connect-ing the outer ends of the side plates to the said vertical pivots, a spring constructed of a single piece of wire doubled to form an approximately U-shaped arm for engaging one of the said members and coiled to provide eyes to receive one of the horizontal pivots and extended from the eyes to form an arm and the terminals of the wire being bent into hook-shape for engaging the adjacent vertical pivot, and operating mechanism connected with the members for swinging the same upward.
8. The combination with a swinging gate, of pivotally connected gate actuating members connected with the gate and a fixed support, a lever consisting of an approximately U-shaped arm connected with the said members, and oppositely extending arms arranged at an angle to the said arm, said lever being pivoted at the angle formed by the said arms, and operating means connected with the oppositely extending arms.
9. The combination with a swinging gate, of pivotally connected gate actuating members connected with the gate and a fixed support, an upright, a lever consisting of an approximately U-shaped arm straddling the upright and pivoted to the same, and oppositely extending arms arranged at an angle to the U-shaped arm, a connection extending from the U-shaped arm to the said members, and operating means connected with the other arms of the lever and extending in opposite directions therefrom.
10. The combination with a swinging gate, of pivotally connected gate actuating members connected with the gate and a fixed support, a lever located above and connected with the said members, spaced supports, brackets mounted on the supports and consisting of a downwardly inclined arm and an upwardly extending approximately U-shaped brace provided at its upper end with an eye through which the arm passes, said brace being also provided at opposite sides with my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature eyes for the reception of fastening devices in the presence of two Witnesses. for securing it to its support, guiding means carried by the brackets, and operating ropes FRANK ULAR MOGILVRAY' 5 connected With the lever and extending Witnesses:
