Description

M. S. OLSEN.
FOUNTAIN PEN.
APPLICATION FILED APB.12,1910.
Patented Jan.31, 1911.
ATTORNEYS of which the and T/IATTl-IE'W S. OLSEN, OF HARVEY, NORTH DAKOTA.
' FOUNTAIN-PEN.
Application filed April 12 To all whom ii may concern:
l lo it known that It. MATTH W S. Onsnn, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Harvey, in the county of li ells and State of North Dakota, have made certain new and useful Improvements in TSmrntain-Pcns,
following is a specifics tion.
My invention relates to sclf-fillablc nonleakablc 'tountain pens, and it consists in the constructions, c inl'iii'iat-ions and arrangw mcnts herein doscribd and claimed. 7
An object of my invention is to provide a fountain pen having simpleand convenient means for filling the pen which will accomplish the filling operation rapidly.
A further object of my invention is to provide a ievi cc whico. is absolutely n0nlcakablc when carried in the pocket, and in larly pointed out in the parts constituting the barrel.
which started. v
A. further object of my ll'lVQll't'iOll' is to provide a pen in which the flow of ink may be adjusted to suit tin; requirements of the user.
A. further object/oi my invention is to provide a device having few parts and of comparatively small cost of manufacture.
A further object of my invention is to provide a pen with a larger capacity for ink than usual. Y
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particu appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawinos in which:
Figure l is a side view of the assembled Fig. Q is a longiti'ulinal section through the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section showingthe inner cylinder pulled out for filling the pen. Fig. l is an'end. view of the device, the feed end oi the pen being rethe ilow of ink may be readily moved, and Fig. 5 is a sectional, View showing a modified form.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 2, I have shown therein an outer cylinder A which constitutes the main portion of the barrel. ends, 011 the end a is secured a sleeve B having; an inwardly extending flange 7) and an outwardly extending flange If. The sleeve B is also threaded internally to rceeive the threaded end of a cap C. The lat ter is secured to an inner cylinder D which extends through the cylinder A and is pro- Specifieation of Letters Patent.
This cylinder is threaded at both Patented Jan. 31, 1911. Serial No. 554,997.
'f vidcd with a slightly enlarged end drwhich fitssnugly to the interior of the cylinder A. Centrally disposed of the cylinder D is a tube E whose end 0 extends into a recess 0 when the cap 0 is screwed into the sleeve The pipe E is provided with a guide member F which is designed to center the pipe Within the cylinder. The opposite end of the pipe E" is provided with an enlarged h'oad E having a circular flange 6 provided with feed openings 0 and terminating in a conical valve member E having a central passage 6 thercthrough communicating with the interior of the pipe E. 1
Adapted to be screwed to the cnd a of the barrel A is afced cap G provided with a central opening 9 and havin a. recess 9 arrsngcd to seat the valve mom or E.
The screw cap G is provided with a flange .lrl for limiting the position of a cap (not shown) whicl'i may be placed over-the pen poiiiit P when the device is carried in the locket. 1 From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device the operation thereof may be readily understood. Vith the pen assembled as in Fig. 2 the operation of filling it is accomplished as follows'i The pulled outwardly, the end of the screw cap G being first inserted in an ink-Well. The
causes the valve .E" to unseat so as to allow the ink to tlow through the opening 9 into .the ink space I surrounding the tube E. The movement of the head 6 is limited by coming in contact with the end of the barrel A. It'will be observed, however, that the openings 6, extend radially toward. the center (see Fig. 4) and that they are, therefore, not closed by the end of the barrel. Now when the cap C and the cylinder D are pushed inwardly again the air escapes hrough the-tubc E and through the open- ,mg g with which the tube E communicates. The valve E however, resents itself and prevents the ink from escaping. If the pen has not been filled by one stroke, 0t 1e1- strokes are made until the ink is also forced out through the central tube E into the ink well. lVhcn .this' is accomplished the cap 0 may be screwed into the sleeve B until the valve E is forced to scat itsclt. The ink in the pen cannot possibly escape since the end of the pipe E is closed and the valve E is also closed. Now when it is desired to use .cap- C is unscrewed it'rcm the sleeve B and is movement of this cap C and the cylinder D opening 6.
the pen the cap C is unscrewed, one-half to two turns being made. Since the cylinder D is secured to the cap C, the enclof the cylinder will be withdrawn from the head which unsezits the valve E and permits the ink to flow through the feed opening 91, the feed of the inlr being regulated by the amount the cap C 18 turned. The suoulder or hinge 5 on the sleeve prevents the inner cylinder D from. being withdrawn entirely from the by the engagement of theii, re with the head 1:5, and also serves to lioio packing in cavity-cf flange 732, in order to make the joint perfectly tight around the cylinders in Fig. 5 l have shown e modified form in which the outer cylinder A is provided with a threaded end if having the central iced opening [V and the side feed openings A". The head a is tapered as shown in the drawings A screw cap E l is provided having conical c and a central feed The cup is screw threaded to engage the heed a". A locking ring or nut N provided which screws on the heud a. r
. the operation to that of the 0th lhc pen is tilled by pulling; the cylinder 1) outwardly and sucking up the ink throug the. centrul opening 0 in to the ink space the screw cup E" being first screwed down firmly against the l head a th creliy closing the side feed openings a while filling the pen. In order to keep all the ink from being ejected into the bottle, when the cylinder l) is forced inwfilldly, the barrel to close the passages Now, when the tube '3. is pushed in, part or" the ink will be forced out of the central tube E, but the ink space i will he tilled with ink. The feed of the device is regulated by setting the nut, against which the screw cup 1*)" beers, utdi'lfcrcnt points, so as to provide inclined food oi ieuings. c of (lii'lercnt size. turu ing the nut so that the cup may engage the head, the feedopenings (5 may he closed this form is similar A is given a few turns 5 se-3,1c5
2. In u fountain pen in outer cylinder, un-
inncr cylinder sliduoly disposed therein, a screw (up arranged to be secured to said outer cylinder and 'irovided with :1 feed openin means for closing said feed opening, a hollow pipe centrally disposed within said inner cylinde' and adapted to connnunicate with said feed opening, a, closure for thc'cno of said cylinder and a screw cap ,tor securing said closure to said outer cylindcrl 3. .ln a fountain pen an outer cylinder, an inner cylinder slidably disposed therein, 11 screw cap arranged to be secured to suid outer cylinder and provided with a feed opening, 11 valve for closing said feed opening, :1 hollow pipe centrzilly disposed within suid'inner cylinder and adapted to columnnicate with said feed opening, and aclosure for the end of said inner cylinder.
+2. in u fountain pen, an outer cylinder, an inner cylinder slicluhly disposed therein; a screw cap arranged to he secured to said outer cylinder and provided with a feed opening. u mlve for closing said feed opening. and 2: air tube for permitting the es:
