ELZER MAY, 0F NATICK, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No.. 98,286, dated December 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WELTKNIIIEL The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent` and making part cf the same.
following specification, and represented iu the accompanying drawings, of which- Figures l andl 2 are opposite side views` of my new or improved welt-trimming improvement.
Figures 3 and 4 are edge views of it.
In this implement there is employed a paringknife A, separate from the stock or holder O.
The holder, formedwith a hook or guard, a, arranged atA its end, as shown, also has a socket, b, to receive the knife A, the socket being arranged alongside of the guard, and extended across the stock C, in manner as shown in Figures 5 and (i, one of which is a side view, and the other an edge view of the stock, without the knife or its clamp.
The said clamp is composed of a jaw or plate, B, and a clamp-screw, D, the former being laid across the kniie', and held to the stock by means of the screw which goes through the stock and screws into the clamp-plate. By turning up the screw, when the knife is between the stock and the clamp-plate, the knife may be fastened in place with its cutting-edge or end in its proper adjustment with respect to the guard.
I am aware that it is not .new to make tile-knife' in one piece with the stock and guard, ip which casev it` not only becomes diiiicult to etti-ct the sharpening of the knife, butit soon becomes so much worn as to render the implement of little or no use. The guard is also liable, in the process of sharpening the knife, t-o become worn or injured, so as not Vto operate to advantage.
With l'ny innnovement, the knife-blade, by being` separate. from the stock, can be removed therefrom, and after having been properly sharpened, can be rstored to place,.ull being accomplished without liability of inj ury to the guard; and when the knife may have been rendered unserviceable by wear, a fresh one maybe substituted, thus preserving the stock and its handle intact. v What I claim as my invention, is- An improved welt-knife, composed -of a stock, O,
guard a, clamp B, screw D, and knife A, constructed v and combined as described.
- ELEZER MAY.
