HENRY G. M. KUHN, OF SPENCERTOWN, NEW YORK.
PICKAX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 17, 1909.
Patented Jan. 31, 1911.
Serial N o. 533,643.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. M. KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spencertown, in the county of Columbiaand State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Pickaxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, and more particularly to picks wherein the points thereof are detachable and self-sharpening.
The present invention resides in the provision of the body portion of a pick having at each extremity a threaded opening, in which is adapted to be retained a detachable point composed of soft metal surrounding a hard steel core, said soft metal wearing away faster than the core, and consequently presenting a continual sharpened point.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a pick constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of a core adapted for use in one form of the points; Fig. 3 is a similar view of another form of core; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of one of the points showing the core therein in dotted lines.
Reference being had to the drawings, the pick forming the subject-matter of the present invention comprises a main body portion 1 having the centrally disposed eye 2 therein in which is adapted to fit the handle. At each longitudinal extremity of the body portion is.an interiorly threaded opening 4 ex tending inwardly toward the center eye 2.
The detachable points indicated in general as A comprises a metal core 5 so constructed' that it is provided with the extension 6. The
core is surrounded by a soft metal point 7 which, due to the fact that the core is constructed of hard tool steel will wear away a great deal faster than the latter, causing a sharp hard point to be continually presented. The extension 6 of the core is surrounded entirely by a threaded stem 8 of the soft metal point 7, said stem 8 being adapted to be received within the opening 4.
Upon each side of the core is provided an angular groove 9 in which is adapted to be received a wrench or other similar tool adapted to secure the point to the body portion of the'pick. V
As the usual construction in picks, one extremity thereof has a point while the other is provided with an approximately flat blade. In the resent invention, the flat blade B is provided with a core of the construction shown in Fig. 3, said core being flanged outwardly and being adapted to conform with the construction of the blade converging to the extremity thereof. The core contained in the point A is approximately uniform throughout its entire length.
Having thus described my invention,\vliat is claimed as new is:
In a pick of the class described, the combination with a body portion, having an inwardly extending interiorly threaded opening therein, of a detachable point composed of soft material ahving a threaded stem formed thereon adapted to be received in said opening, a core of hard material in said soft point conforming with the shape thereof, having an extension formed thereon proj ecting substantially through the stem of the soft metal point.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
