STTS
JOSEPH DANIEL WATERS, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED BED AND TRUNK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr DANIEL IVATERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bed and Trunk; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others acquainted with the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention involves a convertible trunk, which may readily be transform-ed into a bed. In its folded condition, ready for transportation, it may also be used as a desk or table, and likewise as a wardrobe.
The object of the invention is to construct a trunk in a simple and inexpensive manner, which may readily be converted into a comfortable bed, upon the possessor thereof being confronted with one of those exigencies so often met with by travelers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention in its extended form and arranged for use as a bed.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation thereof. Fig. 3
is a diagrammatical view illustrating the operation of the parts when the open bed is converted into a closed structure. Fig. 4: is a view from the bottom looking in the direction of the arrow 4, Fig. 3, and showing the manner of securing certain braces at the open ends of the trunk sections, as hereinafter described. Fig. 5 shows in elevation the metal clamp shown in Fig. 4.
In the preferred form of construction shown, there are two frame sections, open at top and bottom, and consisting of side pieces A and A, one pair of side pieces being joined by an end piece A and the other pair of side pieces, by end piece A B, B, indicate distance pieces, at the ends of which are hinges IL, whereby the frame sections are joined together, the length of the distance pieces being equal to the depth of the two connected side pieces A or A.
In the space formed by the separation of the side frames A A and A A, and in alinement therewith are panels L, which serve to complete the rectangular frame work of the bed. These panels are provided at one end with pins which enter holes in the abutting Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented Jan. 1'7, 1911.

ends of the side frames, and are held in position by buttons 1).
A toggle D, is arranged opposite each hinge member B, upon studs F, on the inner side of the side frames A A, which toggle, when staightened out, serves to lock the side frames and panels L, firmly in position so that the structure may be used as a bed.
Mounted upon studs at the lower edge and on the inner side of the frames A and A, are legs M, which are pivoted so as to permit their being thrown out into position to support the bed from the floor. Correspondingly mounted at the upper edge of the frames A and A, are standards N, provided with notches O, in-which may be laid a cane or umbrella or other sticks to form head and foot rests. The legs M, and the standards N, may be folded within the frames when it is desired to convert the bed into a trunk. As indicated in Fig. 8, this conversion is brought about by breaking the toggle at the point E, the panels L first having been removed, and folding the frames A A and A A, upon themselves.
A sheet of canvas Gr, forming a mattress, extends approximately the length and width of the frame. This mattress is connected at one end to the end frame A by means of spiral springs H, and is connected at the other end to a bar I, by spiral springs H, the bar I being connected to the end frame A by bolts J, by means of nuts on which the tension of the springs may be adjusted so as to hold the mattress in position for supporting the body.
At the time of converting the bed into a trunk, the mattress is folded around crossbars Y, which connect the side frames A and A, adjacent the hinges h, the mat-tress thus forming a covering for three sides of the trunk, and thus retaining the contents within the same. The cross-bars Y, are tied to the side frames A A and A A, by means of the metal strips X, as indicated in Figs. at and 5. The trunk will be provided with suitable fastening and locking means to hold the sections together, and also with a handle K.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
, A combined trunk and bed consisting of a trunk body composed of two three-sided sections, hinged together at their open ends by distance pieces B, the latter having a length mattress connected to the end pieces and extending the length and width of the open structure, and covering three sides of thestructure when closed, substantially as described.
