\VASHIII G-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all, whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I. Hinonn Srnoxos. a subject of the King of Great Britain, residin o at: London. England. have invented cer tain new and useful Improvementsin ashing-Machines. of which the following; a speeifiation.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines in which the clothes are contained in a separate receptacle within ca ing containing" the washing; liquors.
The. invention though adapted to wash any clas of material is especially useful tor washing llannels or other goods in which there, is great ditiicultv in preventing shrinking of ti a material. It may also he usedv however for washing clothes which require to be sol jected to a boiling process.
lhe ohje t of the invention is to produce a machine which will efticientlv and/quickly wash clothes without damage to the fabric of which they are made, and which espeeiallv will no cause shrinking of llannel goods.
Heremtore in rotary machines. dil'licultv has been experienced in. reason of the winding of the contents into ropes which not. only is'destructivc to the said contents hut prevents proper cleansingt' the goods; in this invention. h v siniplv 1 sing the clothes backward and tot-ward i n strong currents oi the washing liquor, without squeezing of serious C()11I$(111011 5 ..tl10 clothes are subjected to only the lightest treatment consistent: with thorough cleansing, the washing liquor ohtaining' full access to all. parts of the con tents.
in carrying out urv invention l cause the cage. 0 receptacle. containing the clothes to he rocked backward and i'cn'ward within the casing containing the washing liquor, the said cage hei g provided with suitahle opening's around its sides so that the liquor passes thcrelhrouoh at each wing"; further ltv varying the contornnitiou oi the casing w th respect to the cage 1 provide that: other currents may he formed entering at the opening of the cage in certain case;
lVithout linntation to the particular construction representing one form 01 my invention. which is. usceptihle of many inodilications, the said invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification. and will then be pointed out in l'llOCllIlllrb'.
Figure l. is. a side elevation partly in section of a washing machine; Fig. 2, is an end l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l i i l l l l l l l l l l l l l i l l l base oil the casing and hai inn o enin gs elevation parllv in section: 'l ie'. 2-. is an end elevation pa rtl v in section showing a 12mclnne arranged, lit)! a hailing) process.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2. A is the cane which is formed of solid ends 1 joined lrv a large numhenotf liars (r arranged so as to leave small spaces hetwcen them for the pm sage of liquid. The cage mounted tor oscillatimi on trunnions A; which are located near the tops of the ends'fli.
E is the casing or tank which holds the washing liquors; the hodv ll is formed of metal. wood. or the like. lllllll attach d to two solid castings at either end secured lonether by bolts such as h); a depression is termed, in the hasc of this casing in which is located a pipe t), for the supp!) of liquors to the casing. The. casing is provided on the outside with hearings C. lived near the top. which receive trunnions ll of the cage and to which levers l) are lirinlv attached ateither end. lacing rocked lav the connecting rods ll actuated o the crank shalt l. The crank shaft 1 is driven by ta t and loose pulle vs. .l. K, and it will he seen therefore. that revolution of t e sha't't causes. rocking of the cage it ahout its pivots ll. ll.
L a soap taut-Land Ti a valve on a water supply: while *0 is a pipe passing into the ill its upper side throughout its length. and also on its under side opposite the outlet cock 1. By suilahle manipulation oi the valves N and Ill. soap and water are ad mitted to the machine and pass lmclnvard and forward thronghthe cage owing to its rocking.
A. material element of the invention residcs in the relative formation of the care and the using. Referring: to Fig. 2. the dotted outlines anti represent the ow treine positions reached h the cage in left and right directions respectively.- with the casing in the position shown at .t on the left a considerahle body of liquor caused to rush up the casing and. guided by the flap. or door Q. to enter the cage again through its openi'op S; this hasnotonly the advantage of 't'nrther washing the clothes, but prevents them fl l'Olll tending to get out of the cage. Looking now at the rie'ht hand side position A it will he noticed that there is less clearance here between the can? and the casing which contorni closely together in their lower portions; as the water does not have time to r a'ch the top of the cage when I Patented Jan. 1 "2. Hit i.
'- back into the cage may preferably be hinged Cit - no liquor to speak of "can be rocked The slanting board T is for to the casing.
am on removal placing the contents on to d from the machine.
Referring now to Fig. 3, since this machine is for use with a boiling process. doors U and Y must be provided on the cage and the casing respectively and since no liquor is required to come over into the top of the the sides of the casing are shown with a small amount of clearance onl) so that the liquor is forced backward and forward through the sides of the cage only.
It must be understood that the cage such a size and shape that only the smallest possible clea "ances are allowed between the base of the cage and the casing, and between the ends of the cage and the casing, so that -an pass that way. What'I claim as myinvcntion and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination in a washing machine, of anapproximately circular easing having its lower part of a flattened semi-circular conformation. a cage with openwork sides and an open top. pivots for the cage on the said casing ecceniricall placed with regard to the central axis thereof, so that the cage in the base of the casing learance space expanding upward between the casing and the cage in its extreme position, and means for rocking the cage within the casing, substantially as set forth.
2. The con'ibination is a washingmachine, of an approximately circular casing having its base of a flattened semicircular conformation, a cage with openwork sides, pivots for the cage on the said casing eceentrically placed with regard to the central axis thereof, so that the cage is rocked in the base of thecasing, a section of the base of the casingconcentric with the cage when in its extreme position so that no unnecessary clea ance is left between the adjoining parts, and means for rocking the cage ithleaving a is of r in the casing, substantially as set forth herein.
3. The combination in a washing machlne, of an approximately circular casing having its base of a flattened semi-circular conformation, a cage with openwork sides and an open top, pivots for the cage on the said casing eccentrically placed with regard to the central axis thereof, so that the cage is rocked in the base of the casing, a section of the base of the casing eccentric to the cage when in its,,extreme ptisition in one direction, a section of the centric with the cage when its extreme position is in the opposite direction, and means for rocking the cage within thecasing.
4-. The combination in a washingmachine, of an approximately circular casing having its lower part of conformation, a cage with openwork sides and an open top, pivots for the cage 0n the said casing eceentrically placed with regard to the cent 'al axis thereof so as to leave a clearance space expanding upward between the casing and the cage in its extreme position, flaps on the casing for directing the liquor current back into the top of the cage, and in ans for rocking the cage within the casing' 5. The combination is a washing machine, of an approximately circular casing having its lower part of a flattened semi-circular conl'm'mation, av cage with openwork sides and an open top, pivots for the said cage on the said casing eccentrically placed with regard to the central axis thereof so as to leave a clearance space expanding upward between the casing and the cage in its extreme position, hinged flaps on the casing for directing the liquor current back into the top of the cage, levers attached to the pivots of the cage, :1 c'ank shaft actuated by suitable motive power, and connecting rods connecting the ends of the said levers with the cranked portions of the cranked shaft. t
In testin'iony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD SYMONDS.
