Description

, @cited tatw CALVIN A. LEONARD, OF
`ROCHESTER, Y.NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 98,170, dated .December 21, 1869.
-lwoo- IMPROVEMENT IN INSOLES POR BOOTS .AND SHOES.
*Nok- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making-part of the same Ihe object an'd nature of my invention will be un` derstood by reference to the specification and drawings, and to enable others to make and use the same, I will describeits construction. l l
It is well known that a great objection to the ordinary insole is its liability to hreak'and curl in the shank, chiefly because of the decreased width at this point, and the softening of the stilening by moisture from the foot.
Io obviate this difficulty, I provide a strip of sheetmetal, a, figs. 1 and 3, upon one or both -sides of the stiiicned body A of the insole, located longitudinally with the same, directly at the shank. This strip may be of any desirable length, to suit dierent sizes of in-I soles, and is secured to the insolehy bindingr over the ends and tucking them through slits cut 'transversely in the body A, after which the 'ends may be pressed close against the maten'al upon the opposite side, as
withdrawn from the boot or shoe, and the insole is moist or soft.
1t is obvious that my inventionis applicable to any 'kind of insole, whethercomposed of one or more thicknesses of material, and the strips a may be arranged upon the same side of the stitien'ing as the felt or other material of which the. insole is composed, as shown in Iig. 3, or upon the opposite side, since the thickness ofthe strip is so slight as not to interfere in any way with the comfort ofthe wearer, evcn when worn next the foot.
It also possesses the advantages of cheapness and simplicity of construction, and it easily conforms to the shape of the boot or shoe in which it is worn.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic stiffener a, of removable insoles, when' L its attachment thereto is effected by means of projecting points at the ends, as shown and described. C. A. LEONARD. Witnesses F. vH. CLEMENT, IRA A. HEBBARD.
