Description

niet (sala peut eine.
BALL & OO., OF` SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 98,124, (lated December 21,1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTER-HEAD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters` Patent and making part of'the same.
fo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM THOMPSON, of thecity and county of Worcester, and OommonwealthofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads for shaping and moulding-machines, and for other similarpnrposes; and I do `hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved cutter-head, together with a portion of the spindle or shaft to which it is attached,
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same; and
Figure 3 represents a cross-section.'
To enable those skilledA in the art to which my in'- vention belongs to make and use same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists- Frist, in an improved frame for holding the cutters, as will be hereafter explained; and
Second, in the combination, with the4 end of the spindle or shaft, of the cutter-frame, ti ghtenn g-wedge, screw-nut, and supporting flanges, 'as-will be hereafter described.
In the drawings- A is the spindle or shaft, which may be supported,
in suitable bearings, so as to turn in a vertical or horizontal position, as may be preferred.
B is a collar or ilange, which may be formed, or swaged up, or shrunk upon the end of the spindle A.
The base C of the cutter-frame D is provided with a hole, through which the end of the spindle A is passed, as shown in the drawings.
The other end'of the cutter-trame D is provided with a larger hole, to receive the cylindrical portion of the tubular tightening-wedge E, while the-outer end of the spindle A is provided with a screw-thread, a, to receive the thread of the tightening-nut F.
The cutters G G are bevelled off at their ends, to
l fit the bevel recesses b b, in the base of the cutterframe C, and the'bevelled sides c c of the tightening-- wedge E.`
The base of the cutter-frame is connected to the top or outer end H ofthe frame, by two supporting-bars, I I, having plain inner surfaces and curved or circular out-er sui-tacos, as indicated in the drawings.
The cutters r Gr are inserted so as to -rest against the insides oi" the supporting-bars I I, with their bevelled end resting in the small recesses b b, and the tightening tubular wedge is inserted so as to force the cutters against the base O, and also against the inner sides of the supporting-bars I I.
The tubular tightening-wedge,being forced firmly against the ends ot' the-cutters G G, by means ot' the nut F, while the base C is supported 'by means of the flange or collar 15, which is secured, as before explained, to the spindle A.
From the bregoing description, it will be seen that cutters of different widths may be secured in the frame D, by means of the tubular tightening-wedge E and nntl`,vbv simply screwingr the nut F further in or out,
so as to bring the bevelled edges c c ofthe tightening- A wedge E againstth bevelled ends of the cutters, whether wide or narrow. 4
It will be observed that the cutter-frame D is open upon each side, thus making my cutter-head light, while at the same time possessing great 'strength and ease of adjustability to receive and hold cutters of Y different widths.
Having described my improved cutter-head,
-What I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent', is-- 1. The cutter-frame D, made with the recessed base C, holding-bars I I, and' open end or top H, for the reception of the tightening-wedge E, substantially as shown and described. c
2. The combination, with thev spindle A, provided with the collar or-shonlder B, screw-thread a, and nut Fof the cutter-frame D and tightening tubular wedge E, substantially as and for the purposes set fort-li.
' HIRAM THOMPSON.
Witnesses z Trios. H. DODGE, ALBERT E. Pnrncn.
