Be it known that I, NELLIE E. JAEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia. in the county of Philadelphia andState of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dress-h leasuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in dress measuring devices, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character, whereby the chalk may be adjustably held on the measuring stick in order that a person may take his own measurements in determining the length of askirt.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be readily and quickly placed on a measuring stick, and one which will fit a measuring stick of considerable thickness and any width.

Vith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same I shall describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of the device showing it applied to a measuring stick. Fig. 2, a plan view thereof. Fig. 3, an edge view. Fig. 4:, a plan view of the upper jaw. Fig. 5, a rear view thereof, and Fig. 6, a plan view of the lower jaw.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the measuring stick, which may be of any desired length and width, having any suitable graduations thereon. Said measuring stick might be what is commonly known as a yard stick, on which is placed the chalk holding device.

B represents the chalk holding member or device, composed of an upper jaw C and a lower jaw D, said aws being simultaneously adjusted to one another and to the measuring stick by the screw E. The upper jaw C is preferably formed of spring metal and composed of a horizontal member E in which is formed the aperture F. With the rear of Specification of Letters Patent.

the member E is formed the depending portion G, in which is formed the virtually L-shaped slot H, said slot connecting with the aperture F. Vith the depending portion G is formed the horizontal flange I,

from which is formed the rearwardly eX- tending arm J, the upper rearwardly eX- tending arm K being formed from the depending portion G.

L represents an upwardly extending lug bent at some suitable angle to the depending portion G for a purpose to be herein- 4 after described.

From the front edge of the member 4 is formed the lip M, which embeds itself in the piece of chalk placed in the device.

The lower jaw D is preferably formed of heavier metal than the upper jaw, and if found desirable may be a casting. In this jaw is formed the aperture O, into which fits the measuring stick. The rear portion of this jaw is bent upward to form the flange P, having a portion thereof cut away to form the arm Q, above and below which rest the arms K and J, thus holding the jaws C and D in a Virtually parallel posi tion. The screw E is threaded into the flange I, the inner end resting against the lug L.

In practice the lower jaw is placed in the slot Hin the upper j aw with the arm Q resting between the rearwardly extending arms J and K, a piece of chalk It is then placed between the jaws and the measuring stick A placed in the slots F and O, which are directly above one another, then by threading the screw E inward, the end of said screw resting against the lug L, the upper jaw will be caused to move toward the measuring stick, and when in contact therewith by further turning the screw the tendency will be to bring the lug L to a vertical position, causing the outer end of the upper jaw to move downward, forcing the lip M into the chalk.

The operation of the device is as follows :The skirt to be worked upon is first placed upon the body and the chalk holder adjusted until it is slightly below the hip line, when the lower end of the measuring stick is resting upon the ground or floor, then by moving the device around the body the end of the stick will be resting upon the floor and the chalk against the skirt, which will cause a line to be drawn on the skirt at a uniform distance from the floor, then by moving the skirt and laying it upon a table and adjusting the chalk holder to the number of inches that the bottom of the skirt is to be above the floor, then taking the end of the stick and running it along the line made by the chalk it will cause another line to be made by the chalk in proximity to the bottom of the skirt. By turning up the skirt on this line it will hang the desired distance from the ground, and will be the same distance therefrom at all points when on the wearer.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown, as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is

1.. In a dress measuring device, a measuring stick, a chalk holder composed of an upper and a lower jaw, the upper jaw being formed. to produce a horizontal member having an aperture therein, a depending portion having a virtually L-shaped groove therein communicating with the aperture, a flange formed with the depending portion, a lug formed with the depei'iding portion. and bent at an angle thereto, and rearwardly extending arms, the lower jaw having an upwardly extending flange, a portion of which is cut away to form an arm, said jaw having an aperture formed therein, and a screw passing through the flange in the lower jaw and engaging the lug formed with the upper jaw for pressing the jaws together and against the measuring stick.

In a dress measuring device, a nieasuring stick, a chalk holder composed of an upper jaw Formed to produce a horizontal member having an aperture therein and provided with a lip, a depending portion having a virtually L-shaped slot therein communicating with the aperture, an upwardly extending lug bent on a suitable angle, a rearwardy extending arm formed with the depending portion, a flange formed at right angles to the depending portion, a rearwardly extending arm formed with said flange, a lower jaw provided with an aperture, an upwardly extending flange formed therewith, a portion of which is cut away to form an arm, said arm resting between the rearwardly extending arms of the upper jaw, and a set screw threaded into the flange ot the lower jaw, the inner end of said screw resting against the upwardly extending lug so that when said set screw is threaded inward it will cause the jaws to move together and at the same time press them against the sides of the measuring stick, for the purpose set forth.

3. In con'ibination with a measuring stick, a chalk holder composed of two independent, interlocking jaws, one jaw overlying the other, each of said jaws having a transverse slot formed therein, leading from one side, the measuring stick adapted to register with said slot, and means for causing a portion of one jaw to engage one face of the stick and a portion of the other jaw to engage the opposite face of the stick.
