INVENTOH UNITED STATES 'PATENT oFFioii.,N
JOHN F. DUNN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BELT-BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 27, 1:910.
Application filed July 14, 1910. Serial No. 571,886.
-fulh clear, and exact description.
Aniong the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a buckle wherein the o'rip on the belt is proportioned to the polline' strain; to provide a construction for tlie gripping nieinber to make the saine niore rigid and to afford guides for the operation thereot,"
and to provide a buckle construction which isI effective, simple and du able.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which FiO'ui-e 1 is a perspective view of a belt provided with a buckle constructed and ai'- ranged in accordance with the present iiivention; Fig. 2 is a top view, on an enlarged scale, of ,fragments ot belt connected by a buckle constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section ot the belt fragments as shown in Fig. 2, and a buckle attached thereto, the section ol the buckle being taken on the line 3*-3 in Fig. i-g Fig. t is a detail View, lon an enlarged scale, show ing the inner side ol the buckle; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the ,line 5 5 in Fig. 2.
The character of belts to which the present invention applied is that known as belts for personal wear. One ot' the chiot' objects in a buckle designed for such employment is that it provides for some 'forni-of ornamentation or decoration. It is for this purpose that I provide a face plate G, the dimensions whereof are Jformed to suit the dcsire or fancy of the trade. The face ol the plate 6 oii'ers opportunity for decoration by engraving, embossing or perloi'ating a design in fretwork.
The plate 6 is provided with a holding and guide loop 7. The loop 7 is an elongated bar rigidly secured to the back of the plate 6, as shown particularly in Fig. 4t of the drawings. A second loop is formed by a cross bar 8, which is rigidly secured to the plate 6 at about the median line thereof. The bar 8 is bent at the outer ends lto forni raised ridges E), under which are formed runways or grooves 4for the upturned edges or flanges l0, 10 of a sliding clamp 11. The 'formation of the ridges 9, 9 on the cross bar 8 provides a rigid construction for the said cross bar, which, in the present invention constitutes the holding ineinber for the clamp 11.
The clamp 11 is constructed as shown in the drawings, havinfr the upturned edge flanges 1.0, 10, said fangos being increased in width toward the downturned crimping edge 12 of the clanip 11. The edge 12 is turned down, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings to forni a dull tooth for the clainp to seatinto the body of the free end A of the belt when the same is drawn under the said clamp. The clamp is provided at either end thereof, and as offsets o'l the 4flanges l0, 10 with the retaining tabs 13, 13. The tabs 13, 13 prevent the separation of the clamp 11 from the plate (i, thc said tabs extending beyond the side of vthe bar 8. The tabs also forni linger holds for the adjustinent of the clamp 11 on the belt.
With a buckle thus constructed, thebu'ckle bearing end B of the belt is secured perinaiiently to the loop 7. After passing the belt about the person, the free end A is introduced under the clamp 11 and over the vbuckle holding end B ot the belt inside the loop 7. The belt is then drawn to the desired snugnoss, and while so drawn the tabs 13, 13 are taken hold of and moved toward the bar 8 until the edge l2 is in contact with the free end A el the belt. lVith the release ol the belt troni the pulling strain of the hand ot the person, the free end A is retracted slightly, the clainp 11 traveling with the said free end. Willi the retraction of the clamp 11 the edge 12 is inoved in closer relation with vthe plate G, binding more tight-ly on the free end A of the belt. '.lhe extent of the inoveinent of the belt to a lirin locking position ot' the clainp 11 is varied according as the chimp is forced into gripping position prior to releasing the free end A of the belt.
By reason of this construction it willvbe seen that an exceedingly durable buckle is formed, the wear on the buckle being on the :7, holding end of a belt; a cross bar l l0 f' flanges providing inclined grooves and f flanges formedA on belt. In this manner the belt may be ad- 'outed to accommodate the pressure on the e t.' i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1'. A belt buckle, comprising a face plate having an. attaching loop Vfor the buckle rovided withv a plurality of upturned curve parallel idly secured to said face plate; a clamp plate having Wedge shaped upturned bearing the edges thereof, said flanges being extended at, the end tto form tabs to revent the'said clamp becoming disengage from said cross bar.
2. A. belt buckle, comprising a face plate arranged to conceallthe' belt engaging membei's adapted to be connected therewith; an attaching loop for ermanent connection with the' end of a be t; a cross bar rigidly connected to said face plate and bent at the lateral extreme to form ridges having guiding grooves therein; and a clamp having a downturned enga 'ng edge arranged to 11npinge upon the tree end of the belt when disposed thereunder said clamp .being providedl with lateral upturned sliding flanges.
In testimony whereof I have signed this sleciicationind the presence of, two subscribing Witnesses.
