WILLIAM F. HIATT, F PITTSBORO, INDIANA.
WINDOW.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
Application Ied October 27, 1910. Serial No. 589,388.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. HIATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsboro, in the county .of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in windows. v
One object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of window sash and supporting mechanism whereby the sash may be readily opened and supported in an open position and whereby when the sash is closed a water and dust tight joint is formed between the sash and its supporting mechanism.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a perspective view of a window frame illustrating the application of my improved window and sash, the latter being shown in closed position; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the window in open position; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section through the upper portion of the window frame and the upper sash, the latter being shown in open position; Fig. t is a horizontal sectional View through the frame and window with the sash in closed position; Fig. is a vertical section through the upper portion of one side of the frame and the adjacent portions of the window showing the sash in closed position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 denotes the main window frame 1n which is arranged my improved construction of window and means whereby the same is supported in an open or closed position. In the embodiment of the invention I pro` vide sash supporting framesn2, one of which is provided for the upper and one for the lower sash of the window. The frames 2 are preferably constructed of angle lron side pieces 3 and top and bottom cross pieces 4. The flanges of the angle iron top, bottom and side pieces are arranged on the inner edges of said pieces and form stops or seats to receive the sashes when the latter are in closed position.
Adapted to fit into the frames 2 are upper and lower sashes 5 which may be constructed to receive one or more lights of glass as may be desired. The sashes may be formed of wood or other suitable material and in the outer edges of their opposite side pieces midway between the upper ends thereof are formed notches or recesses 6 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
Pivotally connected at their inner ends to the inner side pieces 3 of the su porting frames 2 are sash supporting bars and 8, said bars being slotted longitudinally as shown at 9. In one side of the bars 7 and 8 substantially midway between their ends are formed notches 10 which communicate with the slots 9 formed therein, said notches being provided for a purpose hereinafter described. The sashes 5 are pivotally and slidably connected with the slotted bars 7 and 8 by means of clamping bolts 11 which are inserted through the bars and through the side pieces of the frames and have engaged with their threaded inner ends thumb nuts l2 which when screwed up into' engagement with the inner edges of the side pieces of the sash will rigidly clamp the bars to the sash. The bars 7 and 8 are arranged in such manner that when the sash is pulled inward to an open position and the clamping nuts tightened up on the bolts the sash will be supported in its open position as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. When thus supported in an open position the sash may be tilted to the desired angle. When it is desired to close the sash the clamping nuts are loosened on the bolts and the sash drawn inwardly in which movement the bolts 11 will slide along through the slots 9 in the bars 7 and 8 and said bars will swing inwardly against the inner edges of the side pieces 3 of the supporting arms and will lie in a folded position in the notches or recesses 6 formed in the opposite sides of the sashes.
When the sashes are in closed position the latter are preferably secured by spring pro jected locking pins 13 arranged in the opposite sides of the sashes 5 preferably near their upper ends as shown. When the sashes are in closed position the pins will be projected into sockets 14; formed 1n the adjacent side pieces 3 of the frames 2 thus l securely fastening the sashes in closed position. When it is desired to remove the sashes for cleaning or repairing, the clamp.- ing bolts ll are disengaged from the slotted supporting bars 7 and 8 through the notches 10 formed in one side thereof, as will be readily understood. Then the sashes are in closed position they will fit snugly into the frames 4 and into engagement with the flanges of the inner edges thereof thus providing a Water and dust proof joint or closure between the sashes and the supportingfranies.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.,
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle 0r sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims` HavingV thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l` In a Window a main frame, angle iron sash supporting frames arranged therein, sashes adapted to be engaged With said angle iron frames When in closed position, the anges on said angle iron frames forming a water and dust. proof joint between the sashes and said frames, pairs of longitudi- Copies of this patent may be obtainedr for iive cents eacln by' asdress-ing` the Commissioner of Patents,

frames when in a closed position, saidsashes e having formed in their outer side edges longitudinai recesses, sash supporting bars pivotally connected attheir inner ends to the side pieces. of the supporting frames, said bars having formed therein longitudinal slots and having formed in one side, notches communicating with said slots, clamping bolts adapted to be inserted through the slots of said bars and through the adjacent sides of the Window sash, and clamping nuts arranged on said bolts whereby said supporting bars are clamped to the sashes to sup` port the latter in an open position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Wit Washington, D. G.
