UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDISON B. MARSHEL, 0F KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aooisoiv I3. lvlansirnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of lVyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Pen and Pencil Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a newT and improved pen and pencil holder' of a type adapted to act, if desired, as a paperwcight.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which will. be simple in construction, inexpensive to n'ianufacture, strong, durable and readilyT accessible.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pen and pencil holder which can be extended up into a convenient projecting position, when in use, and folded down into a small compass, when not in use.
These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all t-he views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in its vertically-extended position, ready for use; Fig. 2 is aV side view in elevation, showing the device folded down. in which position it may be stored away; Fig. f3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. it is a vertical section on the line 11--4- of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly7 to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates a base, which is preferably of some suitable heavy material, so as to afford sufiicient weight to give stability to the device. This base may be provided with a bottom facing 2 of any suitable soft- 1nat-erial, such as felt, so as to prevent the device marring the woodwork of a polished desk.
Extending upwardly from the base 1, there is provided a pedestal 3, to which is pivotally secured in any well known manner, as by means of a pivot pin 4c, a standard 5. The standard 5 may be provided with an intermediate rib 6 and a pair of side ribs 7 and 8 spaced apart from the intermediate rib 6, so as to forni slots, in which are mounted in-any well known manner a pair of holders 9 and 10. These holders are pref- Specfcation of Letters latent.

crably in the form of spiral springs having a plurality of coils capable of movement relative to each other, so that pens or pencils can be inserted between the yielding juxtaposed coils and securely gripped and held supported until it is desired to use them. The top of the standard 5 may be provided with a suitable knob 11, which provides a convenient hand-hold, whereby the device may be moved about from place to place.
vlt will be seen that the standard 5 is fapable of being swung down into the position illustrated in Fig. 2, or extended up into the position indicated in Fig. 1. In order that it may be conveniently supported in each of these positions, there is provided on the standard a locking pin 12, which is adapted to swing in a groove 13, formed by cutting out a portion of the enlarged head of the pedestal 3, so that abutting walls or lugs l-land 15 are provided on the pedestal 3, which limit the swing of the standard relative to the pedestal.
It will thus be seen that a very simple and cflicicnt device is provided, whereby pens or pencils may be supported in a readily accessible position, even though the device is located on a book or a desk piled with papers.
In view of the fact that the base l embodies considerable mass, there will be no danger of the device toppling over due to top-heaviness.
It it is desired, the device can be used in the position illustrated in Fig. 2, where the standard and holders are folded down into a substantially horizontal position. This position, however, is for the purpose also of permitting the device to be set on its base and still stored in a place wherel there is very little height, such as the drawer of a desk.
lVhile I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, modifications and alterations which may come within' the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a weighted base, of a pedestal integrally connected with said base and projecting upward therefrom, a standard connected to said pedestal, a pivot for pivotally connecting said standard with said pedestal, Huid standard lizwii'ig'` :i phin l'zility nii slots l'lmiuiii oxtimn'liiigr in planos :111 right-:mmm i'o il iiXiS 0i smid pivot, :L paxil.' of spiral spi-ings Qxiuliiiing ill Huid slms 11ml pl' j0(-i'i11;; mi OppQHil siilos 0i' said standard, smid pedestal having :i groove therein, :ind :i kicking piii mi said Standard adapted lo wol-k in Suid groove und limitthe motion 01' Said Standard by migzigenwnt l0 with the end walls of said groove, whereby
