UNITE STATES IRVING L. BRADFORD,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DISPLAY APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1911.
Application filed December 2x9, 1909. Serial No. 535,456.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, InvINo L. BRADFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot Cook and State o1 Illinois, have invented certain new and Auseful Improvements in Display Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in display appliances and the like, and has for its object to provide a construction whereby movable carriers for the display of goods may be moved with reference to associated stationary parts, as of a cabinet, for most convenient and etlicient location both under storage conditions and when operated for display purposes.
Other objects of my .invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the working parts of a structure embodying' my invention with vr'v'ragments ol the cabinet parts in section; Fig. 2 is a section on line ot Fig. 1, with the parts in closed or storage position; Fig. 3 is a like view with parts in open or display position; Fig. 4L is a section on line 4h11; of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment oit my invention shown, I provide a movable carrier, such as a display arm and means supporting and guid ing said carrier for generally-.longitudinal movement, arranged to sustain said carrier at a plurality ot points and in the course ot its longitudinal movements to deflect the carrier to a position at an angle to its initial position.
In the specific construction shown 10 indicates a carrier or display arm in the form ot' a rod, which is conveniently connected with a rear end member or upright, 11, and with a front end member or upright, 12, the latter having a depending handle, 13. The uprights are connected also by a guide rod, 14, preferably lying directly above and parallel with the horizontal carrier 10, so that these parts, 10, 11, 12, and 14, torni a skeleton frame standing in a vertical plane. The rod or carrier 10 is intended, in the particular construction showinfor the reception ot the suspension hooks of coat hangers, 15, or the like, which may hang suspended at right angles to the plane of the carrier. It is frequent-ly advantageous to arrange a number oit such carriers side by side at suitable distances apart in a storage area, herein shown as inclosed in a cabinet, 16, o1 which 17 indicates the rear wall and 18 a front head piece, below which is an opening, 19, in the front of the cabinet structure. Each carrier 10 is mounted for longitudinal movement to lie within or project from the storage area,-in this instance to stand wholly7 within the cabinet or to project through the opening 1!) thereot,-and I provide a means ttor guiding and sustaining each carrier arranged to all'ord support thereto, preferably at a plurality of points, or so as to hold the carrier horizontal, and to guide the carrier trame to an open position at an angle to the vertical plane in which it stands when closed. Specifically, 20 indicates a front guiding structure comprising, in the present construction, a rigid bracket. 2l. secured to the head piece 1S of the cabinet, and a'll'ording support to a pivot 22 carrying a bearing member 23, preferably provided with a roller or other suitable anti-t`riction device, mounted to swivel horizontally with its vertical pivot 22. rIhe rear iframe member 11 has 'connected thereto a vertical pivot, 25, carrying a bearing member, 26, preferably having upper and lower anti-trietion rollers, which engage a guide rail 27 secured in the cabinet 1G below its top, as by feet, 28, at its rear end and clips, 29, at its trent end. rlhe rail 27 runs tlu'oughout a portion o'l its length on a rigl'it line, ruiming :fore-and-alt in the cabinet, and preferably in the vertical plane ot the carrier trame, when the latter is in closed position; but the forward end of the rail 2T is deflected laterally, as at 27, to a position laterally removed from the front guide structure 20.
Now, it will be apparent that the supporting and guiding means for the carrier 10 permit the latter to be moved longitudinally by the handle 13 to either open or closed position projecting from or retracted within the storage space, or cabinet, and guiding the movement otl said carrier in such manner that when the latter is closed it stands at right angles to the front of the cabinet or storage space, and when opened stands laterally deflected at an angle preferably ot Vthe combination of'a carrier member, and a guide, a relativelyl stationary hangen near about o to its closed position. Thus, asi suming the parts initially to stand in the l position shown in Fig. l, if the handle 13 be pulled forward, the guide rod la slides forward in the guide 23 and the rear hanger 26 rides along the rail 27, with the carrier l0 moving on a right line in a longitudinal direction until the hanger 26 rides upon the deflected portion 27 of rail 27, when the arm l0 begins to swing to an angular position, the front guide 23, and hanger 26, turning pivotally, so that when the supporting arm is in its final open position, it stands substantially as shown in F ig. 3. This eEect is advantageous in many particulars, among which may be mentioned that the maximum projection of any carrier l() from the storage space or cabinet is much less than it would be were the carrier moved straight fore-andaft; and further, the angular relation of the carrier to its normal position is such that garments suspended as described from the carrier have their Hank portionsfasuch as the shoulders, in the case of coatsthrown out through the front opening 19 of the cabinet, so that garments are conveniently positioned for display or removal, none being wholly within the cabinet, as would be the case were a full carrier moved straight fore-and-aft.
1While l have herein described in some detail embodiment of my invention which l believe to be new and useful, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that many changes might be -wrought without depar ture from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
