PAINTERS SCAFFOLD.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JorIN Bane, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chi cage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Painters Scaffolds, of which the following is av specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a light, strong scaffold having folding back and end rail guards of sufficient height and strength to prevent a worker or workers employed thereon from falling therefrom; said guard rails and their supports being adapted to be folded for convenience in transportation.
The manner in which I accomplish my objeot is described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, .in which: I
Figure 1 is a plan, the several parts being in position for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the parts being in the same position as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan showing the parts folded for transportatioi'i. Fig. 1 is a back elevation, showing the several parts in the same relative position as shown in Fig.
In the drawings 5 and 6 are front and rear side bars. These are secured together by the end plates 7 and cross bars 8. The bars 8 are preferably round in section. The ends of these bars fit in recesses bored in the side bars and are secured therein by end screws 8 shown in Fig. 2. Supported on these cross bars and secured thereto are foot boards 9, which are parallel with each other, and with the side bars. Pivotally secured on the outside of the side bars near the ends thereof are four end posts 10. Each pair of these posts are secured together near the tops by a cross rail 11. Pivotally secured to each of these posts and to the side bars is a brace rail 12. Pivotally secured to the two rear end posts is a divided back rail 13. This rail is pivotally secured at the extreme ends of two of the end posts 10, above the cross end rail 11. The center ends of this rail are pivotally secured together and to a Vertical center post 14. This post let is pivotally se-- cured at the bottom end to the side bar 6. The pivots 15 and 16 are preferably screw bolts provided with thumb nuts to facilitate the connection and disconnection of the fold ing parts.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Feb. 1 1, 1911. Serial No. 546,231.
hen the several parts are constructed and connected together as described and the parts in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the scaffold is ready for use by aid of the ordinary slings, ropes and tackle.
lVhen the scaffold is to be prepared for transportation or storage, it is disconnected and folded as follows: The bolt 16 re moved; the post 1 1 dropped parallel with the side bar 6. The screws 15 are removed from the bars 5 and 6 and the posts 10 lowered till the rails 11 rest 011 the side bars 5 and G. In this movement the brace bars 12 and rail 13 are laid longitudinally close to the side bars 5 and 6 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis:
1. A painters scaffold comprising a floor having continuous parallel side bars, five posts pivotally secured to said side bars, two posts near the ends on each side bar, and one post in the center of the outside bar, two cross rails secured to said posts, each. of said rails forming a transverse connection of said posts at each end of the scaffold, an outside rail consisting of two sections pivotally secured to two of said posts and to the center post on the outside bar of said scaffold, four brace rails, each of said rails being pivotally attached to the upper part of each of said end posts and to the said side bars, means for detachably connecting said outside rail and said central post, and disconnecting the sections of said rail, whereby said posts, braces and rails can be folded on said side bars, as described.
2. In a painters scaffold, the combination with a platform, end posts pivoted thereto, transverse means fixed on said posts form ing end guards, pivoted braces adapted to hold said posts in a vertical position, and a sectional means connecting two of said end posts and forming a back guard, of a central post pivoted to said platform and to the adjacent ends of the said sectional back guard adapted to support said central portion of said back guard, and means for detachably connecting said central post and backguard rail as described.
