Description

UNITED STATES ADDISON OVERBAGH, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR LUBRIOATING JOURNALS.
To LZZ whom, it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, ADDISON OVERBAGH, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Lubricating Machinery, Car-Journals, &c. 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for lubricating journal-bearings by the use of an endless chain, which is carried along by the friction of its Weight on the journal.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which lmy invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. referring to the annexed drawings, in Which- Figure l is a view of the bearing alone, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section ofthe entire lubricating device.
A represents a journal, with seat or bearing B on the top, which bearing has a groove, a, through the center, sufficient to make room for the chain to travel, and can be used on cars or any other top-bearing j ournal. Around the journal is placed an endless chain, C, which passes through the groove a in the bearing B, and hangs down into the oil-cellar D. As the journal revolves, it carries the chain along with it, which, of course, brings the oil up to the journal-bearing, lubricating the same. The same principle can be readily applied to other than top-bearing journals and become particularly useful in shafting for machinery, Ste. of oil is obtained, and by receiving the oil back in the cellar it can be used over and over again, thereby making a great saving.
It will also do away with the use of cotton Waste or other packing, and a light inferior quality of oil may be Inade to take the place of the more expensive now in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, within the box, as shown, of the flanged journal A, bearing B, with groove a, chain C, and oil-receptacle D, all constructed to operate substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, 1869.
ADDISON OVERBAGH.
