Description

'L. L.- GEORGE. BAT AND BALL GAME DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 7,1910.

Jeri/ 1x6]; G602" 6 WW I I w w I UNITED STATES PATENT oFF oE.
LEMUEL L. GEORGE, 0F YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY C. MILLER, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
BAT-AND-BALL GAME DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL L. GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the count-y of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Bat-and-Ball Game Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to games of that type including a ball which can be tossed about by means of a bat.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide a novel form of bat on which a ball can be caught when rebounding from a wall, descending being tossed into the air, or when thrown from one player to another, and by means of which the ball can be readily picked up from the ground or floor after the fashion of picking up a tennis ball with a racket, the ball being preferably made of rubber so that the game can be played in doors as well as out of doors.
With such objects in View, and others as will appearas the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, the figure is a perspective View of the bat, showing the ball thereon as it is caught or in readiness for tossing.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the bat, and B the ball, which is used with the bat. The bat comprises a handle 1, which is secured to a hilt-like member or cross-piece 2, that has securely fastened thereto two tapering members 3, of any suitable length, as, for instance, eighteen inches,
said members being disposed parallel and spaced apart a distance less than the diameter of the ball. The handle is disposed in a line extending centrally between the ball catching and throwing members 3. The ball will readily lie on the members 3 without Specification of Letters Patent.

rolling laterally off the same, and in catching the ball the object is to cause the ball to drop upon both members together and in this manner there will be no tendency for the ball to roll laterally off the body. The members 3 are supported free from each other throughout their entire length so that the ball can roll freely longitudinally the bat, the cross member 2 serving as a rest on which the ball can be retained. In picking up the ball from the floor or ground, it is merely necessary to place the members 3 on the top of the ball and draw the bat in a direction so that the members 3' will ride of]? the ball and strike the ground or floor. By this movement, the ball is given a rotary motion which will result in the ball rolling up the members, which are held at a slight inclination to the ground. After the ball has thus been picked up, it can be tossed against the wall, into the air or to another player. A game of this character affords considerable amusement and exercise without being of a violent character.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A game device of the class described, comprising a pair of approximately parallel stick-like members straight throughout their length, and a handle to which the members are connected; and a ball adapted to be caught on and held by the members, 'the outer ends of the members being spaced apart a distance less than the diameter of the ball.
2. A bat comprising a plurality of sticklike members, a hilt-forming cross-piece in which the members are secured, and ahandle connected with the cross-piece, and a ball of greater diameter than the distance between the said members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NOAH C. MAY, WM. M. EISENHART.
