Description

tinittd tant @wat time.
Letters Patent No. 97,354, dated November 80, 1869.
LUBRICATOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part: of the same To all whom, it rmay concern:
Be it-known that I, A. S. CAMERON, of the city, County, and State 0I" New York, have invented a new and improved Lubrieati11g-Attachment to the `Valve- Ohests ot' SteamEngines;.and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in, the art to malte and usethe same', reference beingr had to the accompanying drawing, ibrining lpart of this speoiiication, which drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention.
This invention consists in areservoir east solid with the valve-chest of a steam-engine, or with the cover or any other part thereof', provided with a closely-fitting eover or plug, and with an opening leading to the interior ofthe valve-chest, in such a manner that said reservoir is capable of containing a supply of oil or other lubrieatillg-nlaterial, which runs down into the valve-chest by its own gravity.
The opening leading from the oil-reservoir to the interior of the valve-chest may be provided with a stop-valve, so that the iiow of oilinto the valve-chest can be regulated or stopped at pleasure.
Vitli the oil-reservoir is combined a mnd-box, for the purpose of collecting and retaining the impurities contained in the lubricating-material.
In the drawing- The letter A designates the valve-chest of a steamengine, of the usual forni and construction.`
On thisvalve-ehest, and solid with tho'smne, or its cover, I east la reservoir, 1i, to which access eau be had through an aperture, a., which is provided with a closely-fitting cover or plug, b.
Said reservoir is iilrnished with a mud-box, e, and with an aperture, ll, which leads into the valve-chest, so that the lubrieating-material contained in the reservoir B will run down into the valve-ehest, and the. slide-valve and other parts of the engine will be lubrioated without requiring any extra attention.
The mud-box serves to eolleot and retain sueh in1-, purities as may be mixed with the lubricating-Inaterial.
The aperture d, which forms the communication between the reservoir B and the interior of the valve Chest, may be provided with a stop-valve, c, so that the tiow of the lubricating-niaterial troni the reservoir in the valve-chest can be regulated or stopped at pleasure.
It' themonth of the reservoir is stopped by the plug b, and the stop-valves is opened, the lubricating-material will flow from the reservoir into the valve-chest, even if the steam is 011, but if the stop-valve is left oli', and the lower part of the reservoir is filled with lamp-wick, or other absorbent nmterial, the iiowof the lnbrieat-ing-inaterial into the valve-chest can he' so regulated that not more than the requisite quantity passes in, and that no lubricatiiig-material is wasted.
By casting the reservoir solid with the valve-chest, lnuoh labor and expense are saved, and, furthermore, a novel, substantial, and distinguishing appearance is given to my valveehest. v
' \\'ha-t I elaim as new, and desire to seeure by Letters Patent, is-
i. The reservoir B, cast solidwith the valve-chest A, or with a part thereof, and provided with a closelyiitting cover or plug, b, and with an aperture, d, leading` into the valve-ehest, substantially as described.
2. The ruud-box c, forming a part of the reservoir B, east solid wit-h the valve-chest A, or a portion thereof, substantially as set forth.
The stop-valve e, in combination with the reser ervoir B, east solid with the stean1-ehest A, or a part thereof, substantially as dest-ribed.
A. S. CAMERON.
