BED-BOTTOM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Application filed April 27, 1910. Serial No. 557,991.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HERMAN D. SWEIN- HAGEN and FRANK A. THEOBALD, citizens of the United States, residing at Napoleon, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bed bottoms, and has for an object to provide a bed bottom of springs with improved structure permitting the raising or tilting of one end of the spring fabric.
A further object of the invention is to provide a frame slidably hinged upon the main frame of the bed bottom, which said main frame carries a portion of the sprin fabric with means for securing the hinged frame at various inclinations.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a spring fabric a rod extending about the outer edge of such spring fabric with sliding joints permitting one portion of the frame to move angularly relative to the main frame.
With these and other objects in View, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawinosz-Figure 1 is a View of the improved bed bottom in edge elevation with the end frame section raised to an inclination. Fig. 2 is a view in edge elevation of the bed bottom with the end hinged section lowered to a plane with the main section. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the bed bottom showing at one corner springs secured thereon but removed from the remainder of the frame for the purpose of clearness of illustration.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The bed bottom which forms the subjectmatter of this application is made up of side rods 10 and transverse strips 11 rigidly connected therewith and extending between the said side rods 10. The transverse strips 11 are also preferably strengthened by an underlying longitudinal strip 12 properly spacin such transverse strips and rigidly secure to such strips. The strips 11 do not cover the entire length of the side rods 10 but at one end several of such strips are omitted with an end strip 13 at the extremities of such side rods for the purpose of properly securing them together and spacing them apart.
Slidably mounted upon the side rods 10 are blocks 14 to which are pivoted arms 15 as at 16 and between such arms 15 strips 17 are rigidly secured similar to the strips 11 and also extending transversely of the bed bottom. The frame made up of the arms 15 and transverse strips 17 is further strengthened by inclined braces 18 as indicated.
Rigidly secured to the side rails 10 are blocks 19 connected by means of a rod 20 with links 21 pivotally surrounding such rod 20 and hinged in ears 22 carried by the strip 17 nearest the pivots 16. i It will be apparent that when the frame composed of the arm 15 and strip 17 is moved upon the pivot 16 the strip 17 will describe an arc about the rod 20 as a center. This will cause the blocks 14 to slide along the side rails 10 as indicated at Figs. 1 and 2.
Rigidly secured to the arm 15 are blocks 23 with a rod 24 extending across and pivoted in such blocks. Adjacent the ends of the rod 24 pawls 25 are rigidly connected with such rod and provided with teeth 25 positioned to engage upon the rod 20 to hold the frame consisting of the arms 15 and strip 17 in an inclined position as shown at Fig. 1.
The structure thus described comprises the bed bottom proper upon which is constructed a spring fabric composed of coiled springs 26 having their lower coils inserted through openings in the transverse strips 11 as indicated at 27 in Fig. 3 and connected by rings 27 and links 28 and 29 also as indicated at Fig. 3.
About the top of the spring fabric is a main frame 30 terminating adjacent the normal position of the blocks 14 in eyes 31 while an auxiliary frame 32 is similarly secured to the spring fabric carried by the frame consisting of the arms 15 and transverse strip 17 with the extremities of such frame as indicated at 33 inserted through the eyes 31 and slidable therein.
It will be apparent then that as the frame Y consisting of the arms l and cross pieces 17 is raised it will be controlled in its mo-vement by the links 2l so that the blocks 14:
will slide upon the frame 10 While the frame.
32 is permitted a hinging movement and also a sliding movement as may be necessary by reason of its extremity 33 passing through the eyes 3l. The position of the end frame or head rest having been secured is retained by reason of the teeth Q5 engaging upon the rod 20 and as bot-h of the pawls 25 are rigidly secured to the rod 24C the manipulation of one of such pawls will likewise control tlie other.
What we claim is l. In a bed bottom, a main frame, an auxiliary frame Slidably hinged to the main frame, a spring fabric erected upon the frames, a rod forming a frame about the spring fabric and a sliding joint in the last-mentioned frame.
2. In a bed bottom, a main frame, a tilting frame hinged to the main frame, a spring fabric erected upon the frames, a
- rod partially surrounding the fabric and provided with eyes and a rod surrounding the remainder of said fabric and provided with extremities inserted through the eyes.
3. In a bed bottom, a frame, a spring fabric carried thereby, a rod arranged substantially parallel with the frame, a sliding member carried by the rod, a member rigidly carried thereby, a tiltable Section including a spring fabric pivoted to the sliding member, an adjustable supporting device connected with the tiltable section, means secured to the rigidly mounted member and arranged to be engaged by the adjustable device, a rod connected with one portion of the spring fabric, a rod connected with the fabric carried by the tiltable section, and means for forming a sliding connection between the two rods carried by the fabric.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.v
