Be :t known thatA I, JOHN C. CARPENTER, citlzen of the United States, residing at i Houston Heights, in the county of Harrisy [5 -and State of Texas, have invented certain'I I ,n new and useful Improvements in Speed- Regulating Mechanism, of which the following 1s a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in speed regulators and more particularly to that class at such devices as are designed talle -us-fd on the mi2-ture .throttling'type Vof engines. An illustration of Aits application to a .usengine is given y in the accompanying drawings and described in' this specification.

In the operation of myv device the position of the throttle valve does not correspond to the position of the manual lever, but. is automatically controlled h v the governor so as to admit motive fluid in proper quantity to maintain the speed indicated b v the posi- 'tion of the manual lever. In oher words, the manual lever is set for speed and not for throttle opening, the governor controlling the throttle opening.
The operation of my device is as follows: ll'hen the free end of manual lever 6 is raised to a position corresponding with the engine speed desired. it communicates motion to with. The lever 3 operates upon governor stem 2 as a fulcrum` lowers the vulve stem l and opens valve 5. When the engine is started, the plane of rotation of the governor weights is raised, thus lowering the governor stem :2 and operating to close the valve 5. Any further change in the position of the governor stein will tend to open or close the valve, thus admitting the motive form speed. As the manual lever is attached to lever 3 nearer to the governor stem :2 than to "alve stem 4, it is evident that a movement of the manual lever or governor stem will cause a greater relative movement of .the valve stem and a sensitive governor control of the valve will thus be attained. lVith the governor stem at rest, when the manual lever is raised to its limit it operates to first open the valve and then compress the spring 14. lVh-en the'engine speeds up the governor stem descends and operatesl to first relieve the pressure on spring lil and then to close the valve 5. if, while the engine speed is at its maximum, the manual lever 6 is lowered to its limit, it .tirst operates to close the valve and then compress the spring 14', which is then held compressed, holding the valve closed, until the engine stops. In the operation of this, device,.the control lever 3 operates upon the governor stem 2 and the manual rod 11, alternatively, as fulcrums, in controlling l.the valve action, as hereinbefore described.
