FRANK b1. CUBA, INVENTOR WITNESSES:

s ATENT orrion FRANK J. CUDA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JULIUS A. ZIBELL,
OF TAPPAN, NEW YORK.
CIGAR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK J. CUBA, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
Although cigars have been manufactured and smoked for an extensive period of time, they are still mostly made with a closed tip on one side which is produced by applying an adhesive to the wrapper leaf, for the purpose of preventing the unrolling of the same. This causes the cigar to be very tightly wrapped at the tip end thereof and it is necessary to cut off the tip or perforate the same before the cigar can be smoked.
It is old in the art of manufacturing cigars to provide means at the tip of a cigar to facilitate smoking and obviating the cutting off of the tip, and the present invention refers to an improvement of this general purpose.
It consists in the insertion, substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the cigar, of a spiral spring passing nearly through the entire thickness of the cigar and closing the opening so formed, by a cover made of the same material as the wrapper of the cigar, but only partly fastened to the cigar, so as to leave an over-lapping tongue, forming a slight opening between the same and the cigar proper, so as to leave a communication between the outer air and the interior of the cigar.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1, represents a perspective side view of a cigar, Fig. 2, a vertical section through the longitudinal axis of the cigar, Fig. 3, a cross-section at right angles to the axis and Fig. 4:, an elevation of the device, inserted in the tip of the cigar.
In applying the present invention, a cigar 1 is provided with a cylindrical hole 2, partly passing through the cigar, so as to leave an opening on one side of the same, while leavlng an unbroken wrapper on the opposite Specification of Letters Patent.

side thereof. This hole may be made on any point ator near the tip. A small helical spring 3, preferably tapered on one end, is now inserted into the hole 2, and a cover 4:, somewhat larger than the opening of the cigar, is fastened to the same by providing part of it, not more than half, with an adhesive, so that the cover 1, over-laps entirely the hole 2 and hides the spring 3 contained therein while, leaving a sutlicient space be tween itself and the body of the cigar, so as to allow the smoking of the cigar, without cutting Ofi the tip or perforating the same.
A cigar prepared according to the present invention does not differ in any way, so far as outside appearance is concerned, from any other cigar, while it obviates in a most effective way, the troublesome biting or cutting oil the tip, before the cigar can be smoked.
As new and useful is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A cigar, having a hole near the tip end at substantially right angles to the axis of the cigar and only partly penetrating the same, and a helical spring inserted in said hole.
2. A cigar, having an only partly penetrating hole near the tip end at substantially right angles to the axis of the cigar, a helical spring inserted in said hole, and a cover closing the opening of said hole.
3. A cigar, having an only partly penetrating transversal hole near the tip end thereof, a helical spring inserted in said hole, and a cover closing said hole, said cover being so secured to the cigar, as to leave an air space between itself and the body of the cigar.
In witness whereof, the inventor has hereunto set his hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 20th day of March, 1909.
