CARL EDUARD RENNEN, OF OBERHOIVIBURG, AND WILHELM ROMEISER, OF FRANK- FORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY. Y
SPRING-SUSPENSION ARRANGEMENT FOR- VEHCLES.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that we. (hun. Entrano linx- .vi-zx, a subjectv ot' the German Emperor, and residing at Oberh'ombiug, Lothringen. (lermany, and lV'iLHeLM Ronnrsnn, a subject ot' the German Emperor, and residing at l!) .lioclten'heinierlandstrasse, Frankforton-the Main, (zrermany. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Suspension Arrangements for Vehicles. of which the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to spring suspension means for vehicles of that class in which the main spring is supplemented by an auxiliary adjustable spring device.
The objects and nature el the invention will be more fully described in connection with the acconipan'ying drawing and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.
ln the drawing, Figure l is a view in .side elevation of the improved spring suspension embodying the main features of our invention. F ig. Q is a plan -vlew thereof. Fig. 3 1s a view similar to Fig. 1,-w1'th the main spring diagrammatically indicated, and the parts in the position assumed under tension ot a load. Fig. 4 is a. large plan View, shown in section, similar to Fig. 2. elevation of one end of the spring suspension; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line (&6 of Fig. 5 with parts Fig. T is a. detailed elevation o1 the other end of our improved spring suspension.
Lilie characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures ot the drawing.
A part. ot' the trame of the vehicle'is inn.
dicaied at f: and is provided with an indicating member 'l' forwardly of its end, and f is provided with llanges c having openings to receive a bolt :2. rlhe main suspension )ring indicated at. u and is provided with il with the axle oi the vehicle- (not. shown). The main spring u. is secured at a" by a bolt .1 to a rock-ing lever or link d. ".lhe link or lever is pivotally nnnlntcd. on a bracket (Z2 depending from the traine r'. The opposite. end ot' the spring u is ,secured about. the bolt c2, between the flanges ff. as shown in Fig. A rigid U-shaped yoke n. is provided with eyes or extensions n which are supported The extensions or eyes n Specification of Letters Patent. A Application filed July 2. 1908.
1e usual fastening for anchorage therefolv Serial No. 441,614.
are clamped against the frame c by nuts c3, and suitable washers therefor. The lower portions fr* olf the frame c also engage the `volte n at. n2 to prevent move nent of the volte 11.- about the bolt c?. The yoke nis provide-d with a centrallj1 disposed threaded boss n. and with laterally disposed sleeves g.
A tightener preferably in the form of a yoke /Lf is provided with ends 7e slidably mounted in\the sleeves g. 'A' bolt m is mounted.,centrally inthe tihten erjl;u and'is provided with a washer m for longitudinal movement of the bolt. m with respect to the tightene' The threaded portion of the bolt m venga`. ;es the threaded boss u -to provide adjustment ofthe tiehtener with respect to the yoke by Whichn; 1s supported.
The bolt dA is provided with eyes la having lugs L for anchorage of rods g, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The ends It" of the tight I ener carry nipples z' to which the endsof g are secured. The adjacent en ds of rods the rods 5'/ and rg are yleldingly connected together and as shown the rods g are provided with spring containers p into which the rods q extend. The rods g are provided with washers on their ends to engage springs 0 which are interposed between such washers and the opposite ends ofthe clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The main spring a is designed -and intended to sustain a load of a predetermined amount and-the device of our invention is for thc purpose ofreli'eving the spring a when it. has bcen'fiexed to the maximum extent, at which point its resiliency iscompletely taken up. The position ot' the parts under a normal load is indicated in Fig. l, the upper end of the rockinglever or'linltll being adjacent the indi rating part 'l'. lVhen the load is increased the ends of the wires f/ and g are separated and the springs 0 are placed under tension for'v the purpose of relieving the s )ring a. Now it will be readily seen that there is a light load the bolt nu may be adjusted so that av slight.v tensionV of the spring o is utilized whereby ay greater 're siliency of support is provided. lf the load is increased thelbolt m may be. adjusted to place the springs o under a greater initial tension or to in otherwords adjust the rods g and `(/"iarther apart, thereby obtaining a stiffer spring action.v It will thus be seen containers p, `as
that the supplemental spring device can be l Patented sept. 27.1910.
preventin i sired load upon the main spring a before the auxiliary device acts and that Whenva. predetermined amount-of load is placed upon av spring a the latter Awill act in conjunction with the auxiliary spring device to support the load.
W'e claim 1. In a spring suspension for'vehicles, the combina-tion of the vehicle frame, amain spring therefor, a bolt connecting one end of the main spring with the frame, a link connected with theframeI and united with the. other end of the sprin an auxiliary spring connected with the link, a yoke depending from said bolt, and an adjustable v tighteuer slidably mounted in said yoke and connected with said auxiliary sprin 2. In a spring suspension for vehicles, the
combination of the vehicle frame, a main spring therefor, a bolt connecting one end of the spring with the frame, a link connected with the frame and united with the oiher end of the Vsprinpqg'anv auxiliary spring device connected with said link, a yoke supported by said bolt, a tightener yoke slidably mounted in said first namefi yoke and connected With'the auxiliary spring device, and an adjusting. element for moving one yoke with respect to the other to adjust said auxiliary spring device.
In witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of two Witnesses.
CARL EDUARD RENNEN. 'WILHELM ROMEISER. Titnesses BERNHARD RAISIR, JEAN GRUND.
