Description

0; H. FORD.
WRENCH ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED 001'. 27, 1909.
Patented Sept. 27, 1910.
; :ra'rns OTHO H. FORD, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
WRENCH ATTACHMENT.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHO H. Form, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrench Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pipe cutting attachment for monkey wrenches, the object being to provide an attachment which is so constructed that the same can be readily placed in position on an ordinary monkey wrench so as to enable a pipe to be easily cut.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide an attachment which is so constructed that the same will be firmly held in position upon the outer jaw of the wrench in such a manner that the cutter carried by the attachment will engage the pipe to be out which is supported by the movable jaw of the wrench so that by turning the wrench the pipe will be cut.
A further object of my invention is to provide an attachment with a slidable knife carrying block which is adjusted by acrank screw so as to enable the cutter to be moved into engagement with the pipe as the cut is made.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an attachment with a knife carrying block having a rotary knife mounted therein.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a securing yoke in connection with the attachment adapted to clamp the attachment on the head of the fixed jaw of the wrench so that the same will be securely held thereon without any danger of it moving in any way when the cutter is in operation.
lVith these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved attachment showing the same secured in position on an ordinary monkey wrench and a pipe in position to be cut. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail vertical section through Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4:4t of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Gctober 27, 1909.
Patented Sept. 27, 1910.
Serial No. 524,898.
Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the attachment, the knife carrying block, operating screw and securing means being removed.
Referring to the drawing A indicates an ordinary monkey wrench having a shank A provided with a fixed jaw A at its outer end. and a handle A at its inner end and an adjustable jaw A arranged on the shank between the handle and fixed jaw, the above description being given so that the operation of my improved attachment can be readily understood.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a jaw-shaped member B having a recess B to receive the fixed jaw A of an ordinary monkey wrench and extending outwardly from the side portions of the jaw B are offset parallel arms C adapted to fit under the lower edges of the fixed jaw A and said arms are provided with shoulders C at their ends for holding a securing yoke D in position thereon, said yoke straddling the head of the fixed jaw A and is provided with a threaded bore in which is mounted a set screw E adapted to engage the fixed jaw for holding the arms in position on the wrench.
The jaw-shaped member B is provided with an extension B having a threaded bore in which is mounted a set-screw F adapted to engage the jaw of the wrench and it will be seen that by this arrangement the attachment will be held in position securely on the outer jaw of an ordinary monkey wrench.
The jaw-shaped member B is provided with a dove-tail shaped groove G which registers with similar dove-tail shaped grooves G formed in the inner faces of the arms C and slidably mounted within the dove-tailed groove G is the dove-tail-shaped head H of a knife-carrying block H which is bifurcated as shown at H the walls of which are apertured in which is mounted a shaft I carrying a disk cutter K adapted to operate upon a pipe L arranged on the movable jaw A of the wrench, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3. It will be seen that by providing the arms C with grooves I am enabled to place the knife carrying block in position in the recess of the jaw member and the jaw member is formed with a solid outer end having a threaded bore M, said end limiting the outward movement of the knife carrying block.
Mounted within the threaded bore M of the aw member B is a feed screw N provlded with a crank U at its outer end for operating the same and the inner end is reduced as clearly shown at N and is swiveled in a bore formed in the knife carrying block so that when the crank N is operated the knife carrying block will be moved back and forth within the jaw so as to cause the same to engage the pipe and it will be seen that as the wrench is operated so as to cause the same to rotate around a piece of pipe, by turning on the crank the knife will be fed into the same.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided an attachment for monkey wrenches which will enable the cutting of pipe with an ordinary wrench by simply placing my attachment in position thereon and by having one of these attachments in a tool chest a person will be able to apply the same to a wrench to cut a piece of pipe when necessary and when it is not desired to use the same, it can be readily detached so as to allow the wrench to be used in the ordinary manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An attachment for wrenches comprising a jaw member having a recess to receive the jaw of a wrench, said jaw member being provided with parallel arms adapted to straddle the shank of the wrench, a yoke adapted to straddle said arms and head of the jaw, a set screw carried by said yoke for engaging the head of the aw of the wrench, a set screw carried by said jaw member for engaging the jaw of the wrench and a movable knife carrying block mounted in said jaw member.
2. An attachment for wrenches comprising a aw member having a recess to receive the jaw of a wrench and provided with a dove-tail shaped groove, parallel arms extending outwardly from said jaw member adapted to straddle the shank of the wrench, a yoke for securing said arms in position on the wrench, a knife carrying block provided with a dove-tail shaped head mounted in said dove-tail shaped groove, a rotary knife carried by said block and a crank operated screw mounted in said jaw member connected to said block for operating the same.
3. An attachment for wrenches comprising a jaw member adapted to be arranged over the outer jaw of a wrench, means for securing said jaw member in position on the aw of the wrench, said jaw member being provided with a recess having a dovetail shaped groove, a bifurcated knife carrying block provided with a dove-tail shaped head mounted in the groove of the jaw member, a shaft extending through the walls of the bifurcation of said knife carrying block, a disk cutter mounted on said shaft, said jaw member having a threaded bore in its end, and a crank operated screw mounted in said threaded bore swiveled in said knife carrying block.
4. A pipe cutting attachment for wrenches comprising a jaw member adapted to be arranged over the outer jaw of a wrench, said jaw member being provided with parallel arms straddling the shank of the wrench, a yoke for securing said arms in position on said wrench, said yoke having a thumb screw for engaging the head of the jaw of the wrench, a set screw carried by said jaw member for engaging the aw of the wrench, said jaw member being provided with a threaded bore in its end, a knife carrying block slidably mounted in said jaw member, a rotary knife carried by said knife carrying block, and a crank operated screw mounted in the threaded bore of the jaw member having a reduced end swiveled in said knife carrying block.
