To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. UHLE MANN, a citizen of the United States of 'America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-Mountings, of which the I following is a specification.
- centrally This invention relates to that classof eyeglass mountings in which the nose guards are carried on the inner ends of manually operated levers pivoted on the rigid bridge piece of the mounting. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient structural formation and combination of parts adapted to afford a very compact and durable connection of the uard levers to the brid e, and with whic the operating springs fir the guard levers are inclosed and protected and at the same time attached at their inner ends to the guard levers in a strong and simple manner, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.

In the present improvement the springs 12 will be of the particular form described and claimed in my former application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 486,485, filed March 29, 1909, and each spring will comprise a flat strip or ribbon of resilient materal coiled in volute relation around a pivot pin 7, and with the outer end extending away from the coiled body portion of the spring and adapted to bear againstthe'inrrep face of an adjacent clip or strap 2 of the mpunting, preferably by means of a bearing loop 13 at the end of said extended portion, in that the same affords a ready and-con venient means for increasing or decreasing the tension of the spring. by a. slight coiling or uncoiling of the said loop 13 in one direc- -tion or the other, as set forth in detail in my aforesaid application Serial No. 486, 485. In my prior construction set forth in the aforesaid application, the inner ends of the volute springs were connected to the guard levers by being formed integrally;therewith, While in the present construction said springs are made as separatepieces and-connected to the guard levers by a construction of parts as follows t 1 14 are lugs formed'on the extreme inner ends of the springs 12 and projecting laterallytherefrom as shown. Said lugs are adapted for engagement in side recesses 15 formed in'the pivot orifices 16 of the guard levers 9, and are held from aycidental disengagement by swaging down the upper ends of said lugs 14 into cavities 17 formed in the guard levers at sides of the recesses '15 aforesaid.

In the modification shown in'Fig. 5, the aforesaid loops 4, heretofore described as being above the bridge ends, are arranged below the same, to.provide a construction having advantages in some particular forms of the mounting.

The combination in an eyeglass mounting, of a rigid bridge, pivot pins at the respective ends of the bridge, lens attaching clips at the ends of the bridge, guard levers journaled on said pivot ins, and operating springsof a fiat ribbon orm encircling said pivot pins and connected at their inner ends to said levers by lateral lugs engaging in side recesses of the pivot orifices of the levers, the outer ends of said springs having rearwardly extending portions adapted for hearing against tlie'rear faces of the attaching clips, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination in an eyeglass mounting, of a rigid bridge, pivot pins at the re spective ends of the bridge, lens attaching clips at the ends ofithe bridge, guard levers journaled on saidpivot pins, and operating springs of a flat ribbon form encircling said pivot pins and connected at their inner ends to said levers by lateral lugs engaging in side recesses of the pivot orifices of the levers, the outer ends of said springs having rearwardly extendin portions ending in curved loops adapted for bearing against the rear faces of the attaching clips, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in an eyeglass mounting of a rigid bridge formed with wide and fiat ends that are bent upon themselves to form rectangular loops the free ends of which abut against the bridge, pivot pins arranged centrally in said loops, guard levers arranged in said loops and upon the pivot 'ins, and operating springs also arrange in said loops and engaging said levers and a fixed portion of the mounting, substantially as set forth. The combination in an eyeglass mo'unting, of a rigid bridge formed with wide and fiat ends that are bent upon themselves to form rectangular loops the free end members of which abut against the bridge, pivot pins carried by horizontal members of the loops, the companion horizontal members of the loops being formed with recesses to receive the free ends of the pivot pins, guard levers arranged in said loops and ,upon the pivot pins, and operating springs also arranged in said loops and engaging said levers and a fixed portion of the mounting, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination in an eye lass mounting, of a rigid bridge formed with wide and flat ends that are bent upon themselves to form 'rectangular loops the free ends of which abut against the bridge, pivot ins arranged centrally in said loops, guar vers arranged in said loops and upon the pivot pins, and operating springs of a fiat ribbon form encircling said pivot ins and connected at their inner ends to sa1d levers by lateral lugs engaging in side recesses of the pivot orifices of the levers, the outer ends of said springs having rearwardly extending portions ada ted for bearing against the rear faces 0 the attaching clips, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination in an eyeglass mounting, of a rigid bridge formed with wide and flat ends that are bent upon themselves to form rectangular loops, the free ends of which abut against the bridge, pivot pins arranged centrally in said loops, guard levers arranged in said loops and upon the ivot pins, and operating springs of a fiat r1 bon form encircling said pivot pins and connected at their inner ends to said levers by lateral lugs en a ing side recesses of the pivot orifices 0 tie levers, the outer ends of said springs having rearwardly extending ortions ending in curved loops adapted for caring against the rear faces of the attaching clips, substantially as set forth.

The combination in'an eyeglass mounting, of a rigid bridge formed with wide and fiat ends that are bent ,u on themselves to form rectangular loops t e free end members of which abut against the bridge, ivot pins carried by. horizontal members 0 the loops, the companion horizontal members of the loops being formed with recesses to receive the free end of the pivot pins, guard levers arranged in said loops and upon the pivot pins, and operating springs of a flat ribbon form encircling said pivot ins and connected at their inner ends to sa1d levers by lateral lugs en aging in side recesses of the pivot orifices o the levers, the outer ends of said springs having rearwardly extending portions adapted for bearinoagainst the rear faces of the attaching Slips, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination in an eyeglass mounting, of a rigid bridge'formed with wide and fiat ends that are bent upon themselves to form rectangular loops the free end memi bers of which abut against the bridge, pivot pins carried, by horizontal members ofthe loops, the companion horizontal members of the loops being formedwith recesses to receive the free ends of the pivot pins, guard levers arranged in said loops and upon the pivot pins, and operating springs of a fiat ribbon form encircling said pivot pins and connected at their inner ends to said levers by lateral lugs engaging in side recesses of the pivot orifices of the levers, the outer ends of said springs having rearwardly extending portions ending in curved loops adapted for bearing against the rear faces of the attachingclips, substantially as set-forth.
