UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KATHERINE GULVER, 0F AUSTIN, TEXAS.
SPOOL AND WORK HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE CULVER: a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool and lVork Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in spool and work holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and ornamental device of this character which may be readily clamped upon a work table or other support and used for supporting a plurality of spools of silk, thread or the like, as a pin cushion and also for holding a piece of work.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention'consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved spool and work holder; and Fig. 2 is a vertical front to rear sectional view.
The invention comprises a body 1 preferably carrying a screw clamp 2 for attachment to a table or other support. Said body is preferably in the form of a bird to render the device ornamental and its spread wings 3 form supports for a spool holder 4. The body of the clamp 2 is of U-form, its upper portion being united to the body of the bird by a standard 5 and its lower portion being formed with a threaded opening to receive a clamping screw 6, the upper end of which is a swiveled plate or head 7 and its lower end a finger piece.
The body of the bird is preferably made hollow and so constructed as to provide a clamp which may be used for holding a tape measure, a piece of fabric or work. This work holder or clamp comprises a station ary jaw member 8 formed by the upper portion of the bill of the bird and a movable jaw member 9 formed by the lower portion of its bill. Said member 9 is a lever pivoted intermediate its ends, as at 10, and having its inner end connected by a link 11 The latter projects through an opening in the rear portion of the body 1 and is pivoted inter- Specification of Letters Patent.

mediate its ends, as shown at 13, its inner end having the link 11. connected to it and its outer end 14 being shaped to form the birds tail and being adapted to serve as a handle which when depressed will cause the link 11 to actuate the jaw lever 9 to its open position. A coil spring 15 arranged within the body and having one end fixed and its other end connected to the lever 9 actuates the latter to its closed position or against the jaw 8 to clamp or hold the work or other article placed between the parts 8, 9.
The spool holder 4 comprises a circular base plate or disk 16 suitably fastened to the outspread wings 3 of the bird and having fixed at its center a standard 17 on which are removably arranged one or more similar plates or disks 18, 19.
20 denotes an annular row of upright pins or studs arranged concentrically on the base plate 16 and having their lower ends riveted or otherwise secured in said plate. Said pins 20 are adapted to serve as spindles for spools of silk, cotton or the like, which latter rest upon the base 16 and rotate upon said pins or spindles when the silk or thread is unwound from the same. The pins 20 support the removable plate 18 which is provided with similar pins 21, which latter in turn support the plate 19. The plates or disks 18, 19 have stamped in their under faces seats or depressions 22, 23, respectively, to receive the upper ends of the pins 20, 21, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This construction renders the device more rigid and substantial and prevents the disks or plates from rotating when silk or thread is being unwound from one of the spools on the device. The uppermost plate 19 is retained in position by a pin cushion 24 consistingof a base plate 25 upon which a pin cushion proper is suitably secured and also having concentrically arranged upon its inner face and within the pin cushion proper a nut. 26 to receive the reduced screw threads ed upper end 27 of the standard 17 as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The nut 26 is fixed within the pin cushion 24 and is turned when the latter is turned. \Vhen the pin cushion is removed the plate 1!) may be removed to permit spools to be applied to the pins 20, 21 and when said parts are replaced, as shown in the drawings, the spools will be effectively retained on the pins but allowed to rotate.
Having thus described the invention What is claimed is:
A device of the character described comprising a body, an attaching clamp carried thereby, a circular plate carried by the body, a centrally arranged standard rising from said plate and having a reduced screw threaded upper end to provide a shoulder, an annular series of upright pins arranged upon and fixed to said plate, a second circular plate removably arranged upon the standard and having a central opening to receive the latter and an annular series of depressions stamped in its bottom and adapted to receive the upper ends of said pins, an annular series of upright pins secured to and rising from said removable plate, a removable top plate having a central opening to receive the standard and having in its bottom an annular series of stamped depressions to receive the upper ends of the last mentioned pins, a pin cushion, a centrally apertured bottom plate for the latter and a nut fixed to the said bottom plate Within the pin cushion and adapted to receive the reduced threaded end of the standard, whereby the bottom plate of the pin cushion Will be retained upon the shoulder" upon the standard and Will retain the removable plates' upon the latter.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.

C. BELOHER.
