CONCRETE-MIXING MACHINE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13,1910.
Application filed February 11, 1910. Serial No. 543,332..
To all whom it may concern:
y Be it Vknown that I, LAWRENCE IV. GARGILL, a citi/"Lenl of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete-Mixingstruction and arrangement oi parts which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects vI accomplish in `the'manner illustrated in the. accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my machine, Fig. 2 is a plan view, a portion ot', one side of the casing being cut away for the purpose of clearness in illustration, down to the dotted line y on Fig. 3, and, Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the machine on line m-a' of F1 2. imilar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In car ing out my invention I provide a horizonta ly disposed mixer easing 1, the body of -which is of a rounded trough-like form in cross section'and the upper open mouth portion la of which is provided with vertical side walls. Une end of the casing, which we will term the rear end, is closed by a suitable plate 2 and the opposing or forward end thereof is open', as shown; The casing is mounted in suitable upright trame members or supporting standards 3, which `in turn may be supported upon horizontal base frame members, such as are indicated ata.
Mounted longitudinally and rotatablyl within the casing l, is a conveyor' shaft 5 on which is carried a screw or spiral conve yer The conveyor shaft is journaled in and extends through the end plate 2 at one end of the machine and carries on the outer side of said end plate a belt wheel 7, whi le the other` end of the shaft extends through the open forward end ot the casing and is rotatably mounted in an arm 8L of a bearing bracket 8 which is supported'from the end .ot the cas ing, as shown.. At intervals the outer edge portions of the conveyor blade 6 are formed with outwardly extending lugs G. These lugs are preferably arranged on said blade edges, so as to form horizontal lines of said lugs at each quarter of the circular space within which t 1e conveyer turns. As shown in the drawing, a desirable number ofthe opposing lugs 6 or those'which are arranged in 'alinement with eachother on opposite sides of the center of the' length of the conveyer have mounted thereon, straight horizontalmixing bars-9 which bars maybe of different lengths as desired. Between these horizontal mixing bars, the op iosingjor op positely located lugs 6 have a ixed thereto,
comparatively short diagonal mixing blades or bars l0, each of the latter extendin ,\l as shown, at an angle with the direction lo jthe lengths ot' the mixing bars or blades 9 and likewise crossing the conveyor blades at angles.
In mioration, motion is contributed to the shaft 5 through the belt mounted on the wheel 7 and the material to be mixed is discharged through a suitable hopper not herein shown, through the mouth portion l at the rear end of the machine. 'Ihe material thus introduced into the machine in a plastic state, is conveyed toward the outer open end ot' the machinel and discharged therefrom through the engagement with the mixture, of the conveyor blade (5 and the inclined blades l0 heretofore described. It is obvious that during this conveying action, the engagement ot the conveyor and mixer blades, with the concrete mas-i, results in a thorough breaking up oi the mass and min# gling or the elements or ingredients composing the saine, so that when the mass is dis charged from the open end of the machine, the ingredients thereof are thoroughly mingled one with the other.
In the mixing'and conveying operation, it will be understood that materia is conveyed or moved toward the .outer end of the casing by the action of both the s iral con veyer blade 6 and the inclined bla es lO and that owing to the diiference in the inclina.- tion of these conveyor blades, the conveying action of the spiral blade 6 must be considerably slower than that of the inclined blades l0. tcrial which are picked up or engaged by the fasterconvcying members 10 are forced ahead and dropped downward on to the slower conveyor blade 6 'from 'which mata As a result portions 4of the ma-V eor rial is constantly dropping; into the Spaces created in. tlie nmtciial by the coinpai'zitiiic. l rapid forward coi'iveying action' of the ineinberey lt). The mass thus operated on by the spiral and inclined blades is :it intervals picked up by the longer sti'aiglnt bars er blades 9, from which it is again dumped mi dropped loncl(l on to the Spiral conveyer. This combined nctien of thel comparatively slow feeding' ,spiral blade, thc more rapid feeding inclined blades und the Straight bars 9, results in theiong'hly breaking and mingling the muss of material, in passage from one end of the casing to the other.
Fi'oni tlic 'foregoing description9 it will be seen tlmt. simple nndvretlicicnt ineens are moglie miled longitudinally in said ceding, ci' iniziing barn Carried by the Spiral convcyei' blade 'ng in the direction of the length ci the convcyer, and intermediate mixing lilau'les carried by said cenveyer binde, said intern'iediate blade-S being inclined 'with reference to the length of the Spiral conveyer, and incluis oiimparting n, rotary i'notion to the Conveyci shaft.
il. In n concrete mixing machine, the combination with a. casing adapted to receive material to be mixed and having a discharge opening at one end, of :i conveying mixing device i'otntnbly mounted in said casing' and comprising a, elia't-5 a Spiral con: veyci' lilzidc cfniied t-lic1el' y, n plurality of mixingl'inizs: cau-rind by Suid cQnvcyei: blade and cxtcmling in the diiectinn'of tlic lengtli mi? the shalt, :ind'n plurality of 1n sind conveyei blades inclined with elcicnce to the direction olf tlic lcngtn of the slin'ft :ind connected willi said spiinl cnnvcyer blade.
ln testinicny nlw'gec l illix my signature in presence of two witnesscs.
