Leiters PatentN 97,012
, dated November 16, 1869.
IMPROVED HANDLE POR BRUSHES, CARDS, cc.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom ttmay concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL WITT and AARON W'AI-T, both of Htibbai'tlstoii, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Handle for Brushes, (ia-rds, &c.; and we do hereby declare the following, to be a clear and exa-ct ldescription of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specificattion, in which Figure l is'a side view ofthe handle, and
Figure 2 shows its applieationl Similar letters'of reference indicate correspondinal parts in the two figures.
Our invention consists in forming an opening in one end ot' the body of a east-metal connection, which opening is to receive a handle as ordinarily, butthe other end is provided with jaws or forks of different dimensions, so that a loner bearing,r is formed to re- This coi'mection is constructed Aof cast-metal, andformed with a. socket, a, at one end, and -forks l) ll at the other end.
The socket a is made to receive one end lof the handle A, in any well-known manuel'.
The forks b 1) are intended to grasp 'the head B, andl form a firm bea-ring or support for the latter, and thereby produce a strong joint, which is further increased by screws, rivets, or other tastenings passing through the bead and one or both forks.
The head may be cutout, to let in thc forks, and thus the projection ofthe latter beyond the surface of the head is prevented, which is especially desirable on the lower face ofthe head, as seen in tig. 2.
The advantages of the connection are, its cheapness and strength, its simplicity and practicability.
Should the bead break or the brush wear ont, the connection is still useful, and is readily applicable to new brushes,
In cards, it has been customary to slit the wooden handle, and thus secure the bead, but this inode is expensive, owing to the liability ot' breakage, and the cmisequent necessity of new handles.
Having,lr thus described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desir(l to secure by Letters Patent, isv The lower fork ll', extended beyond the other, to form a long,` bearing to receive thestrain which is connteractcd by the short fork b, when the two forks are cast with a body, (i, havin a socket at the opposite end, and the parts form a cast-metal coimcction,
