To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BOWERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cuspidors and has for one of its objects the provision of a cuspidor with means for holding the mouth thereof normally closed.

One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a cuspidor with a valve member adapted to hold the mouth of the cuspidor normally closed, so as to prevent the escape of foul odors from the bowl of the cuspidor, yet to allow matter to enter the bowl.

-With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to certain combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved cuspidor, partly in section, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the valve member, Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one of the trunnions of the valve member, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the cuspidor, with parts broken away, showing the locking means for detachably holding the lower or bowl portion of the cuspidor to the upper or mouth portion thereof, Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the trunnion connection for the valve member, and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the locking means for the upper and lower cuspidor sections.

Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention 1 denotes the lower or bowl section of the cuspidor, which is formed with a flange 2 on its upperedge, which flange is preferably disposed at right angles to the vertical axis of the lower section 1. The lower section 1 supports an upper section 3, which forms the mouth of the cuspidor and is formed with a flange 4 on its lower edge, which flange 4: is disposed at right angles of the vertical axis of the upper section 1, so as to fit flush on the lower section flange 2. The upper section 3 is removably secured to the lower section 1 by means of locking bolts 5, which are formed with squared heads 6. The lower ends of valve member is formed disk like and is adapted to close the mouth of the top section, when placed in a horizontal position thereon. In order to hold the valve member 10 in a normal horizontal position the trunnions 9 are formed with flattened portions 11, which normally engage with bearing openings formed in the supporting plate 12, which is attached to the top section 3 adj acently to the groove 8. The inner ends of the trunnions 9 are bifurcated and fastened to the edge of the disk member 10. When spittal or other matter is projected or deposited .on the valve member 10 the same will be tilted by the force of said matter and after said matter drops off of the valve member into the bowl section 1 of the cuspidorthe valve member will automatically balance itself, thereby closing the mouth of the cuspidor and retaining any odors generated in the bowl of the lower section 1. The connection between the two sections of the cuspidor enables a person to readily clean the bowl section and the mouth section of the cuspidor.

Having described my invention I claim 1. In combination, a cuspidor having a circumferential groove formed therein, a valve member having trunnions disposed in the groove and means for holding the trunnions in the groove.

In combination, a cuspidor having a circumferential groove formed therein, a valve member having trunnions disposed therein and formed with flattened portions, and a supporting plate secured to the cuspidor adjacently to the groove having openings engaging the flattened portions of the trunnions. 3. In combination, a cuspidor having a flange formed on a lower section constituting the bowl section thereof, a mouth section for the cuspidor having a flange engaging the flange of the lower section, said second flange having slots having reduced ends, bolts attached to the flange of the lower section having heads adapted to be secured in the slots, and means carried by the upper section for holding the mouth thereof normally closed.
