GATE-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1910.
Application filed May 13, 1910. Serial No. 561,091.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERLEY l ORMISTON, citizen of the United States, residing at Days Creek, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gate opening devices and comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view showing the manner of swinging the gate. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a convexed plate and showing chain connections therewith. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the detail shown in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of hinges of the gate.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a post and B is a gate having a gate post 13 which, at its lower end, has a hinge member B engaging a pivotal pin upon the hinge member C which is fastened to the post A. The upper hinge of the gate consists of the member D having an elongated slot D therein, and D designates a hinge member which is fastened to the post A and has an integral pin D for engagement with the slot D.
A bar E is bent upon itself at two locations, designated respectively by letters E and E which bent portions are positioned parallel to each other and at right angles to the face of the post to which said bar is fas tened and said portions E and E are apertured for the reception of a rod F, the upper end of which has a crank arm G fixed thereto. A convexed plate H, a detail of which is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, is provided with a central opening II for the reception of the end of the crank G and chains K are fastened to the eyes L projecting from said convened plate, one near the.
upper and the other near the lower marginal edge thereof. Said chains are connectod to the rods J which in turn are pivotally fastened to the opening bars N, which at their inner ends are pivotally mounted on the pivot O which projects from the bar E at a location slightly below the lower of the portions E of said bar. Ropes or cords Q are fastened to the outer ends of the bars N and afford convenient means whereby an operator may cause the same to swing in one direction or the other.
Fastened to the lower end of the rod F is a crank arm R held to said rod by means of the nut R and a rod T having an eye T at one end. is connected to an eye T upon the crank arm R and the other end of said rod T is fastened to an eye bolt S fastened to the front swinging end of the gate. Said eye bolt S has a nut S mounted upon the threaded end thereof and affords means whereby, as the nut is tightened, the slack may be taken up.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood and is as follows :The parts being adjusted as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when it is desired to cause the gate to swing in one direction or the other it may be done by the operator pulling upon one or another of the cords Q to cause the bars N to tilt. By reason of the connections J between said bars and the convexed plate, the latter may be caused to tilt in one direction or the other as the chain fulcrums over the convexed surface of the plate. As the plate H tilts, the crank G will be tilted therewith by reason of the free end of said crank arm projecting through the aperture H and bearing against the edge thereof as the plate is turned. The crank arm Gr being fastened to the rod F will cause the crank arm It to turn therewith and which will, through the connections of the rod T with the gate, cause the latter to swing in one direction or the other.
\Vhat I claim to be new is A gate opener comprising, in combination with a gate post having a flattened top, a bar having two laterally projecting portions thereof bent upon itself and parallel to each other and apertured, one of said portions thus bent extending over and resting upon the flattened top of the post, an angled rod journaled in said apertures of the bar, a
collar resting upon a port-ion of the bar In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my which engages the flat top of the post and signature in the presence of two Witnesses. supportin saidangled rod a convexed plate T fixed to the end 0; said angled rod, a link PERLEY L'-ORMISTO\ r fixed to said rod and adapted to actuate a itnesses:
latch, and lever operated connections With R. H. SUMMERS,
said convexed plate. J. H. ROLAND.
