INIPROIVE'MENT IN HEAD-BLOCKS FOR SAW-MILLS.
The Schedulereferrec'ito in these Letters Patient and making part of the same.
To all whom Ait may concern.- i I Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BEALL,of Hamilton, Butler county, State of Ohio, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Head-Blocks for Saw-Mills.; and I do hereby declare the following to be asuiiicently full, clear, and exact description thereof, to enable one skilled in-the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part oi' this specification. v
v My invention consists of certain devices for feeding the knee I of the head-blockforward, and, also, pecnliar devices fory permitting the same to be readily disconnected from the feed, and drawn back.
In the accompanyingdrawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view o f a head-block` 'and gconnections, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspectivcwiew ofthe feeding;racks.`
`Figure 3 is a view of the under side of thev knee, showingthe devices fordisconnection.
Figurefl is a side elevation of the knee.l n Figure 5 is a plan,,exhibitingthe shape of the sliding block, which-operates the feeding-racks. l A A are the ways--or rails of Aan ordinary sawmill, and B G, alheadblock7 and knee, respectively, embodying my invention' or improvel'nents. V In the interior of the head-block B, two racks,E E', are located, which, by alternate forward motion, serve to feedthe "knee O ibrwarthby connection with pawls D D of the knee. y
The backward motion of" the racks is obtained by means of the lever F, the forward motion of each rack serving, by connection withl lever F,- iu the manner shown, to push the other back. y 'i A spring, G, between the ends ofthe lracks and the lever, serves to take up lost motion in the moving part-s.
To the racks E E', I secure anti-friction rollers f H, sutablyjournaled in jaws c e', of theracks.
These rollers are acted upon by the device which I have designed to give mot-ion to the racks, which consists of a block, L, which slides in bearings I I', and is operated by the leverJ and bar K.
This bar K is continued to the otherend of the mill, and'is connected to similar devices to the opposite head-block, so that both maybe fed simultaneously.
It' necessary for the headfblocks to act independent] y, one of the blocks L may slide upon the bar K loosely, and be acted upon by an independent hand- Vlever.
The block L is constructed as clearly shown in lig,
5, viz, with one gr more curved prominences l, and
one or more depressions l'.
The racks are adjusted so that the roller of. one-may rest at the deepest point of the depression, while that of the other is at the highest'point of the prominence, so that the Vmovementpi` the block'I L backward and forward, by means of lever J, will give a reciprocating vmotion to the racks Ev The block L may be ad- `iusted'on the bar K, by set-screw M.
`"lhe knee() is fitted with a key, N, which has aV atteued projectionY 'or cam, n, on the end, and also with a double-ended spring, 0, and spring""p`aw1s P "P', which are thin enough to spring of themselves, to allow the racks E E to move back, and are pivoted or hinged to the knee at p p.
The position ofthe cam n and pawls P P', when in 4 operation, is seen in Iig. 3, the ends of the p'awls beingthen fully extended, (the spring O serving to keep themso,) in order to engagev withlthe racks E E.
1t will beA seen, by reference toig. 3, that by turning the key N a. quarter of a revolution, the outer ends of the pawls P -P are thereby contracted sufijciently to permit of the knee O being drawn back,
and, if necessary, entirely removed from the head-- block.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- AA head-block for saw-mills,combining in its construction a bed-plate for vthe log to rest upon, two
racks E E', with fljiction-rollers H H in the outer l
