AUGUSTA DU BUISSON HOPKINS, OF COVINGTON, LOUISIANA.
GRATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 26, 1909.
Patented Deo. 6, 1910. serial No. 524,674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTA DU BUISSON HOPKINS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Covington, in the'parish of St. Taminany and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fruit and vegetable graters, and the principal object of the same is to provide a strictly sanitary grater in which the grating operation is p erformed in a closed casing so that foreign material cannot obtain access thereto and in which the operating parts are shielded so that thereJ is no danger of injury being done to the operator incidental to the operating of the machine.
In carrying out the objects of the inven tion generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one
preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein r- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the irnproved grater. Fig. 2 is an end view.` 1g. 8 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical Sectional view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 3.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, 1 designates a flat base which has upstanding inwardly curved or troughed sides 2 forming springs adapted to take up any undue pressure placed upon the grater when using the same. The top edges of the spring sides are connected by the concaved seat 3 in which the casing 4 is lirmly and permanently seated. The body of said casing is substantially cylindrical and is open at its top. The rear of said body is continued upwardly on a slight outward incline, which together with similarly arranged end portions provides a guiding hopper 5 for conveying thematerial to be grated or crushed.
The ends of the cylindrical body are provided with a vertical slot 6 that extends from their upper edge to the center thereof, the upper end of said slot being flaring and the lower end being rounded to provide a bearing 7. At the lower portion of one of said ends, and preferably in alinement with the slot 6 therein, a drain cock 8 is provided which communicates with the lower part of the interior of the casing and by means of which the liquid contents thereof may be drained olf.
The upper longitudinal edge of the cas-A ing 4 has a hinge connection with a cover 9 for closing the top of said casing, said cover 9 being integral with an angularly projecting cover l0 for the front of the hopper 5, the cover 10, in turn, having a hinge connection with a cover 11 for the top of said hopper. This arrangement of covers provides means whereby the top of the hopper may be opened without opening the front thereof or opening the cylinder 4; and also permits both the hopper and the casing to be opened, the independent opening of the hopper being for the purpose of reg ulating the feed of material, and the opening of the casing being for the purpose of r moval of the grated material or to permit cleaning of the casing and hopper, as will be readily understood. Each end of the hopper cover 11 is provided with an outstanding lug 12 adapted to be engaged by the latches 13 pivoted to the ends of the hopper 5 so that said cover may be detachably fastened in a hopper-closing position.
A grating or crushing cylinder 14 has its body portion provided with a plurality of rows of struckup spurs 15. Said cylinder is of a size to permit free rotation of the same within the casing 4, and has its ends threaded as indicated at 16 for the reception of the threaded end caps 17. One end cap cariies a stud shaft 18, the other cap carries a shaft 19. The shafts 18 and 19 are adapted to be litted within the end slots 6 of the casing 4 and rotate in the end bearings 7 thereof. Said shafts project beyond their bearings and are removably held therein by the latches 20 that are pivoted to one side of said slots 6 and are provided with a notch 21 which engages over said shafts when said latches are rotated to straddle said shafts. Preferably said latches are formed of fiat metal and have their free end rolled, as indicated at 22 which holds said end spaced from the end of the casing 4 so that it may be readily grasped by the operator to rock the latches to either the locking or unlocl ing position.
The shaft 19 terminates in a crank handle 22 which is equipped with a hand means of which the grating cylinder may be manually operated. Said shaft 19 also cargrip 23 b'y ries a pulley 24 by means of which the shaft may be placed in belted communication with a motor for operating the cylinder, when necessary or desirable. Y
It Will be seen from the foregoing that the improved machine provides simple and effective means for sealing the hopper and casing, and also simple means for retaining the grating cylinder Within said casing. Another distinctive feature of the invent-ion is in the employment of the end caps for the grating cylinder which can be readily removed to give access to the interior of said cylinder and which in addition provides supports for the shafts 18 and 19.
Iliat I claim as my invention is tl A Vgrater comprlsing a casing, the rear Wall of said casing extendingup to form the rear Wall of a hopper7 a cover hinged to said In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my 25 signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
