Description

' dichiari tatrt salme.
@patent Gemine.
-' H'ENnreADAMs, orNnWronK, N. Y.
Leneeefretenelve. 97,751, deze@ Deeembee 14, 1869.
` The Schedule referred, to in these Letters lPateixi: and making part of the same.
To all @chain it amy concern.- l Be it known that I, HENRY B. ADAMS, of the city, county, and. Stateof New York,'have made certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Goering andFluting; and I do hereby declare `that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation.- of the same, Areference being had to the accompanying drawings, makip g part of this specification, in which- Figure lis afront elevation of the machine with `my improvements. v i
Figurev 2, a central vertical .cross-section Lof the Figure 3a detached top view-of the lever, which presses the under rollernshown on a reduced scale.`
' Similar letterslof referenceindicate corresponding parts in the several `figures.`
`The nature of the inventionconsists in providing the lever, in which the lower` roller of the machine rests, with means for adjusting its pressure with great convenience, and to operate inV a ready manner with `accuracy. l.
'lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvements, I will proceed to describe its construction and ope-ration in detaih i' A represents the upper, and` B the lower roller,
i which are constructed in the usual manner, hollow, ,for heating,'and on their peripheryavith thev desiredcclrugations or ribs, as used for goierng'. v4l
C represents the bed-plate of' the machine, and D `is the side frame ofthe same, which is secured to the `bed-plate, extends rearward, and extends over along the top of the upper roller, as shown, in order to sup.
port and guide said top roller.
The lower roller is guided' and rests and turns in a twoarined lever, E, which has itsfulcrurn in the rear `part ofY thefrarne D. i Y
The fulcrum bearing of said lever is constructed with two pointed set-screws, ff, entering-in the side of the lever.
One of these set-screws f f is fixed in the rear of the frame D, the other in a part, G, cast on the bedplate O. p
The forward end of said lever is forked and provided with bearings, H H, in which the lowerlever is supported; and one of the forked ends is formed with a projecting handle, I, and also with the eye J on the saine, to which the treadle of the machine is attached by means of acord, K.
The rear end of' said lever has a central projection downward, and to it is hinged a short veitical doublearmed lever,- L, which has its long arm projecting down near the bed-plate, and to it is attached a spiral spring, M, which has its other end forward part ofthe bed-plate. v
The short arm of said lever L bears against a setscrew, N, fitted inthe rear part of the lever E, by means ot which the relative position of the lever E, is regulated, and in' that manner the spring obliged to stretch more or less, or its tension and action .upon said lever and roller regulated.
The upper' roller has onebea'ring in the side frame, and passes through it, and has an ordinary hand-crank attached to its outer end.
rlhe otherend oi' said roller is supported in a small vmovable'bearing-piece, O, which is secured to the top` v l portion of the frame by means of a thumb-screw P, in order to provide for changing said roller with others of different patterns. l
Q .represents an ordinary clamp, for securing, the machine to the table.
The cord` K has a loop, R, on its end, through which I pass a secondary loop;` and I employ a small metal ring, S, through said loop, to prevent it from withdrawing from the loop It. By this means theesaid cord can be lengthened or shortened conveniently, and
`in a more ready and less expensive manner than with a belt and buckle, as now4 commonly employed.
It will `be evident from the foregoing that the maf chine, as herein described, is more convenient, can be regulated more accurately, and yis more durable than those before known ol used.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
The spring M, levers E andL, the set-screw N, and roller B, when combined and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein shown.
' HENRY B. ADAMS. Witnesses:
K. BocKLnN, A WM. BARKER.
