Application tiled Hay 6, 191th Serial No. 559,848,
This invention relates to regulatingv valves,
and has fornnobject to -provide a valve adapt-ed to. control? the'sup'p'ly 'of water to a boiler. i'
-A furthr'fobject of the inventionis to prophragms tzactuntel'tb valve with spring meansl'forregulatingthe tensionv on 2o the valve and:withgiimprvedmeansffor 'exf pending tiie td iaph'ra'gnsfto the valve when the 'ivaterjjiii "the boiler fallsbblow' the required yleig.,iht.' r
A forth 1i' Meet-ouf the invention is to provide'in connection withthe water. elumn of a steam boile'ria'tube exfendi'gtothe water line and surround-i'ng anotheftube inwhich is a coniiuedliquiitl', suclrliquid beinp,l also 'confined within-the dia'phragnis 'regulating the valvejf- L y y With these audother objects in view, the invention` comprises certain novel constructions, combinations 'andfl arrangements of parts, ,as -vvlill-beg'hereinafter fully described and claimed. 'f
In the draynfiigsz-Figuie 1 is a view inV longitudinal lse'ction of a balanced val-ve and -diaphmgms for actuating the valve. Fig.
2 is a view in vertical section of the top of' ab the water colmn of u boiler showingthe tube"extendin'g .therein to the water li'ne andabout the'tube connected' with the diaphragms. 3 Like characters of reference designate cor- 46 responding parts throughout vthe several views. A The invention which forms the subjectmatter of the present application is intended to control -the"in tro luction of steam to n pump or feed water to a boiler und embodies a balanced valve' 10 disposed in the valvevasing 11 of substantially tho usual and ordinary balancedvalve type. (lonnuiinicating with the valve casing 1 1 are nipples or 56 unions '12. and 13 either one 'of which could valve stem 14 lrigid.
vide in lcombination with*ujf-valvedial serve as the inletand the other'the outlet for steam to' the pump or water tothe boiler.
[Extendingthrough the valve casing is a connected zit-its lower -end with anut orco lan 15 which forms the upperextremityof a battery of flexible diaphragms 16 connected in the usual manner and secured at the lower end to a threaded nipple l.17. The threaded nipple 17 is in 65 communication -with a tube 18 which is plug ed as at.19 at the lower end and is surroun ed `by a tubular casing 2G. The tube 18 and' the diaphragm 16 are iilled .with ywater orfan desired or approved .liquid and the tubu ar casing 20' is in communication by means of e tube 21 with the to of Vthe vwater*column 22 connected witli .i steam boiler. A passage 23 .is provided -jfor 'admitting :steaminto the top of the 75 water columnabove the water line 2t. The tube 21' extending downwardlyinto the water column' may lie-adjusted as to height by means of a coupling 2 5 screw-threaded and by reason of'such screw-threading ad- S0 justable vertically. Toulimit the movement ofthe valve 10 .`a serew 26 1s preferably inserted through the top of the valve easing 11 and provided with engaging' means 27 foi' 'operating the same although the use'of such 8 screw and operating means is not essential to the present lnvention.
In operation the diaphragm 16 exerts tension uponz the vulve stem 14 to hold the valve to seat undernormal ten'iperature. VJhen 90 the water line 24 is above' the lower end of the tube'21such tube 21 and tubular casing .20 will filled withthewater which will surround the tube 18 which is filled with water or'bther fluid. When the water linel 95 drops below the end ofthe tube 21 the water passes from out thetubular casing 20 and tube 21 and such tubular casing and tube are then filled with steam xwhich surrounds the tube 18 and raises the-temperature of the 10 ,liquid therein either vuporizing such liquid or expanding it without vaporizing :is the @use may be and thereby expanding the diaphragm 1G and opening the valve 10. rhe opening of the vulve l() autoinaticallyad- 10') mits steam to the pump or to admit water to vthe boiler when the water issupplied under constant pressure.
lVith the device cfmstructed as shown and the diaphragm und'tube 18 filled with water 1L@ practically instantaneous both as to opening it is found that the action' is very acute and und closing the' valve. The admission of steam to the clsng 22 almost instantly raises the temperature of the liquid-contained in the tube 18 to such an extent as to open the vulve 10 while the moment the water line reaches the tube 21 the steam within the'tube 21 und the tubular casing 2O is condensed und the water Hows up and surrounds the tube 18 thereby reducingthe temperature of the confined li uid such temperature further being reduced y the great radiation surface of the diuphrugms themselves.
What Iolaim is '.lho combination with 'a valve casing und reciprocating valve mounted therein of n valve stem extending outwardly through the valve casing, an djusting' screw inserted througjx the valve casing -und adapted to E. P. CRUMP, N. MEEM.
