Description

W. G. ROGERS.
EARTH AUGER.
APPLIOATION FILED mus, 1909.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
WILLIAM G. ROGERS, OF ST. THOMAS, ONTARIO, CANADA.
EARTH-AUGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Application filed July 6, 1909. Serial No. 506,093.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. ROGERS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of St. Thomas, in the county of Elgin, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Earth-Auger, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a large earth boring T-handled tool for making post holes or wells, or for ascertaining the nature of the soil at some distance below the surface. And it consists of a head and of two blades secured to said head and each of said blades cut away at their lower end or formed in two parts, one part being inclined partly in ward, and the other part inclined inward and overlapping one another, as shown, and of forming the adjacent faces of said overlapping ends with holes, and of an auger bit formed with a long shank which extends through said holes and into said head and secured therein by a washer, and it also consists of the improved construction and novel combination of parts of the same as will be hereinafter first fully set forth and described and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of an earth auger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is another view of part of same. In this view the head is shown partly in section, and in said section the long shank is shown secured to the head. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 00, 00, of Fig. 1, looking downward.
In the accompanying drawings ;the numeral 1 indicates the stem usually made of hollow gas pipe which terminates at the upper end in a T-coupling 2, which T-coupling is threaded on to the upper end of said stem 1, or is otherwise secured thereto, and through this T-coupling 2 the handle 3 usually formed of wood, extends.
lis a head usually made of malleable cast iron into the screw threaded end, a, of which the screw threaded lower end of said stem 1 is inserted and secured, and to this head 4 the metal concaved blades 5 provided with the cutting edges, Z), are rigidly secured.
The lower ends of the blades 5 are cut away at c, and their lower ends, ol, and, c, are bent inward, the ends, d, of the blades 5 are partly bent inward a short distance, as shown, and the ends, 6, of said blades 5 are bent inward and overlap one another, and each of the overlapping ends, 6, are provided with adjacent side holes, f, and these holes, f, are formed through said inwardly inclined overlapping ends, 6, as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3. And through the holes, f, of these inclined overlapping ends, 6, the auger bit 6 is inserted, as shown, and said auger bit 6 is provided with a long shank, h, which extends into the head 4 and provided with a washer 9, through which it extends and to which it is swaged as shown at, 71:.
The auger bits 6 may be straight instead of turned as shown and described.
The operation is as follows ;-The auger bit 6 extends through holes, f, in the adjacent faces of the blades 5 and is secured in place as described. And this auger bit 6 causes the blades 5 to penetrate the earth to be excavated when the handle 3 is turned toward the right, and at the same time this auger bit 6 provides said blades 5 with a centering bit. The adjacent faces of the inclined overlapping ends, 6, of the blades 5 being provided with holes, 7, said blades may be locked together by said auger bit, and the long shank, h, of this auger bit stiffens and strengthens said blades, and together with said holes, 7, prevents the blades from giving to any great extent, so that the cutting of the earth auger will be improved and the blades will brace each other; and said blades extending over one another as described, this invention will improve the kind of earth auger to which this invention is applied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim p In a device of the class described, a head,
blades secured thereto, said blades being cut away and provided with partly inclined ends and with inclined overlapping ends, and said inturned overlapping ends provided with holes, in combination with an auger bit which extends through said holes and is provided with a long shank which extends into said head, a washer in said head, and said long shank secured in said head by I said washer, substantially as shown and de- 10 nesses.
