SAMUEL it. BRICK, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part. of Letters Patent No. 9,74 2. dated May 24, 1853.
To all wit-0111. it may concern:
Be. it known that I, SAMUEL R. Union, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State ot'lennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in (laslmrners, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the interior of the ordinary gas-burner with along center conducting'pipe surrounded by a long concentn'c cappingpipe, causing the gas to he suddenly deflected from the top of the conducting pipe and to descend, and thus have its pressure diminished, and aftcrward pass through horizontal perforations in the base of the capping-pipe into the area of the burner and ascend to the burning-point, by which means the. supply for burning is made uniform, though the. pressure in the main gas-pipes may vary, and blowing of the gas and waste is thereby prevented and good combustion and a steady bright light is obtained.
To enable. others skilled in tittingto make and. use my lllVOlltlOll, 1 will proceed to describe its construct ion and action, reference being bad to the annexed drawings. makiup part hereof; and to make the philosophical prineipleson which the invention is based more clearly understood, I will state the facts: first, that gas, (like all tluids,) when passing through long small apertures, is subject to some friction, which tends to diminish its "elocity and pressure and tends to make the supply at the burning-point uniform; second, that a sudden deflection of gas checks its velocity and tends to make its pressure and supply at the burning-point uniform; third, that gas, beinglighterthanthceommonatmosphere, has always a strong tendency to rise, and hence causing it to descend tends to make its pressure and supply at the burning-point uniform; fourth, that passing gas through holes whose combined. area is smaller than those holes or the aperture at the burningpoint tends to prevent an excessive supply and to make the supply uniform at the burning-point.
The object of my invention is to make the tlow of gas at the burning-point. uniform and not excessive, notwithstainling a variation of pressure in the main gas-pipes, on thecoin bined priwipies operating in the same succesi 1 l i l sive order and by the combined means herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a sectional view through the middle of the entire burner. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the ordinary burner with the improvement applied to it. In both of which like letters refer to like. parts.
In Fig. l,a a is the common gas-burner screwed on a. male screw at the base of the center conductiire-aperture, b, which center pipe has a lower female screw-base, e, which screws onto the supply gas-pipe. This center com'lneting-pipe is made as long aspossiblc, and the aperture in it is about onesixteenth of an inch in (iiametentorctard the "clocity of the gas. Over this center conducting-pipe, on a male screw near its base, I screw a concentric capping-pipe, 0, also as long as possible, and having a small space above and a deep space around the conducting friction-pipe and small horizontal perforations d d, near the base of this deep space, communicating from it through the capping-pipe to the area of the burner or outer tube, in order that the gas shall he suddenly deflected from the top of the center conducting pipe and then do scend as much as possible and afterward be drawn by the small perforations through the base of the capping-pipe as it escapes into the common burner and ascends to the burningpoint, by which means the slight friction, sudden return or deflection, descent, and drawing of the gas, in the order presented, may make the supply at the burning-point uniform, though the pressure in the main pipes varies, and the blowing and waste of gas is prevented and a most complete combustion and bright light is obtained.
1 do not claim passing the gas through a small long aperture, nor a sudden deflection of it, nor a descent of it, nor drawing it nor any of them together, less than the whole.
What- I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement and combination of the center conducting-pipe and its capping-pipe inside of the common gas-burner, in the manner and for the purposes above described.
SAM. it. IllilU-K.
