SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GREEN O. BEASLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vinona, in the parish of Winn and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sewing machine attachments, the object in view being to provide a grinder which is applicable to sewing machines and adapted to be readily attached and detached by unskilled persons, the grinder being useful for sharpening scissors, needles and various other implements.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section of a portion of a sewing machine, showing the improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the device looking to ward the inner face thereof. Fig. 3 is a de tail perspective view of the clamp or holder. Fig. at is an edge view of the holder, showing the grinding wheel in section.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 represents a grinding wheel or disk provided with a beveled periphery 2 and a cone-shaped outer grinding face 3. This grinding wheel may be composed of any suitable material or composition containing emery or carborundum or light gritty substance of a suitable binder and is carried by aholder or clamp comprising a body 4 in the form of a strip, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 8.

The clamp or holder may be composed of any suitable metal preferably spring steel which may be afterward finished in any desired manner. In order to secure the grinding wheel to the clamp or holder, the latter is provided on its outer face with an outwardly projecting tapering pin or key 6 which gradually increases in size or diameter toward its outer end as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the material of the grinding wheel being preferably molded around said pin or key. The body of the clamp or holder, it will be observed by reference to Figs. 1 and 2, extends diametrically across the inner face of the grinding wheel and together with the tapered center pin 6 is embedded in the body of the wheel thus preventing any rela- Specification of Letters Patent.

tive rotative movement between the wheel and its holder. Furthermore, the relative arrangement of the grinding wheel and the diametrical portion of the clamp or holder enables the inner face of the grinding wheel to bear tightly against the outer surface of the central part of the balance wheel of the sewing machine to which it is connected thus insuring the firm clamping of the grinding wheel to the machine and frictional contact between said parts necessary to effect the rotation of the grinding wheel with the balance wheel of the sewing machine.

The opposite ends of the strip-like body 4 are bent over and recurved to form spring clips 7 and the inwardly projecting terminal portions 8 of said clip are serrated, toothed or roughened upon their inner faces as shown at 9 to obtain a firm hold upon the end disk or button 10 which is usually found on the balance wheels of sewing machines, 11 designating the balance wheel of a sewing machine and 12 the arm or frame of the machine (see Fig. l).

The grinder hereinabove described is adapted to be securely held by means of the spring jaws on the balance wheel of the sewing machine in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, being slipped into place and removed therefrom by a movement in line with the plane of the end disk or button 10. By beveling the faces 2 and 3 of the grinding disk, the latter is better adapted for the purpose of grinding scissors, knives, needles and various other articles.

When the device is not needed in use, it may be readily removed from the machine and placed in the drawer.

I claim A detachable grinding device for sewing machines consisting of a grinding wheel, and a clamp or holder for said wheel comprising a straight body portion extending diametrically of the inner face of said wheel and embedded therein and having a tapered key projecting therefrom and also embedded in the body of the grinding wheel, the opposite ends of the body being bent over to form spring jaws which are roughened on their inner faces.
