UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE;
'INDICJALBQR EUNNEE'DU Specification of Ire-tte'rsfatiint.
I0 I v atm agt goncems CHARLES F. SENDALL,- a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the 'county' of Kings and State! of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicator- Funnels, of which the following is a specification, such' as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
This invention relates to funnels for use in filling the gasolene tanks of automobiles or similar vehicles with gasolene or similar material, and the ob ie'ct thereof is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction andprovided with an indicator which is automatically operated when the tank is'filIed to indicate the fact.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom-' panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in ach of theaviews, and in which Figure 1 v is a ,sectional View showing a part of a gasolene tank and my improved funnel and the method of its ope'ration;- Fig. 2 a bottom plan view of the funnel device with the body of the funnel omitted.
. In'the drawing forming part of this specication I have shown at a the top part of a gasolene tank of the class usually employed in'connection withautomobilea' and the top a of said .tank is provided with an opening a around which is an inwardly directed screw, threaded collar a, and in practice the tank is closed by means of the screw threadedplug in, the usual manner, said plug being not shown.
In the practice of my invention I'provide a funnel device comprising the usual ta-' pered'body portion 6, the smaller endof which is provided with atubular extension 6 adapted to be passed through the.aper
ture a and around which is a flange b the bottom of which is provided with radial grooves 6;.
-Within the tubular extension '1)? atthe bottom of the funnel is placed a concentric tube 0, the top of which is closed andconnected'with the funnel, and the tubular extension 6 by radial web members 0 and the top'of the tube 0 is closed and connected therewith is a smaller central tube (Z which communicates with thetube 0 and wh .ch
or larger end (if the 'funnelby radial mer'n here 2 Passing vertically through the tube 0 is a wire or rod f with the upper end of which is connected, a disk'or other device f preferably provided with the word full, and the lower end of the wire or rod f is connected with a float f vertically movable in the tube 0.
Whenever it is desired to. fill the tank a the tubular extension 6 of the funnel is passed inwardly through the aperture (1 and the flange b rests on the top of the tank a and holds the funnel in proper position, the gasoleneis then poured in the top of the funnel and passes down into the tank and a as the gasolene rises in said tank, the air passes out through the aperture a and through the radial grooves b in the bottom of the flange b and when thetank is filled, or approximately so, the float f rises, and
that said disk is exposed above the top of the receptacle 6, as indicated in Fig. 1, and this indicates that the tank is filled. The funnel b is also preferably provided with a screen 9 near the bottom or smaller end thereof, but this forms no part of my invention.
Any suitable device may be substituted for the disk f, as an indicator connected the rod 7 and disk f are moved upwardly so with the rod f, and changes in and modifi-' cations of the ,construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without 'departin of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.-
Havin fully described my invention, what I cairn as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
from ,the spirit 1. A funnel, the clischargelor smaller end with said float and passing upwardly through the said tubular member and prov ded at its upper end with an indicator,
said supplemental tube being rovided with means for limiting the upwar movement of said float.
.2. A funnel, the discharge or smaller end of which is provided with a tubular extension, and an annular flange in the bottom of which are radial weaves, a supplemental tube placed in said tubular extension and provided with a tubular member which passes upwardly through the funnel, a receptaclesupported in thetop or larger end of the funnel and with which said tubular member communicates, and a rod passing through said tubular member and rovided at its lower end with a. float movab e in the supplemental tube and at its upper end with an 1midi-enter adapted to rest in said receptac e.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed-my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 15th day of December 1909.
