ELECTRIC-LA1VIP SOCKET-COVER AND SHADE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Applica filed February 16, 1910. Serial No. 544,190.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CAssmY, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Lamp Socket-Covers and Shade-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object I have in view is to produce an electric lamp socket cover and shade holder which will effectively perform its function of covering the socket and supporting the shade, will give access for the ready removal of the socket, and will be of such construction that it will be cheap to make and will lend itself to an ornamental design.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved socket cover and shade holder, showing the fixture nipple to which it is attached, and the shade supported thereby; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same parts, showing the fixture nipple and the lamp socket in elevation.
The socket cover and shade holder has a top 3 which may be of dome shape, and having at its lower edge an external screw thread 4: above which is a shoulder 5. The top 3 is made in one piece with a depending central sleeve 6 which is internally screw threaded. The fixture nipple 7 is provided with a long screw threaded extension 8, upon which the sleeve 6, which is internally screw threaded, is mounted. The extension 8 of the nipple passes through the sleeve 6 and receives upon its lower end the electric lamp socket 9, which is held thereon by engaging screw threads and by set screw 10. The screw threaded collar 11 on the end of the lamp socket screws on the extension 8 until it seats firmly against the lower end of the sleeve 6,loosening of the socket being prevented by the set screw 10. Below the top 3 is a depending cylindrical shell 12 which extends downwardly on slightly flaring lines and then flares outwardly to form a shoulder 13, against which is seated the lip of the shade 14. Below the shoulder 13 the shell is formed to provide a band 15 which is approximately vertical or parallel to the axis of the device, and in the band 15 are the set screws 16 for engaging the lip of the shade. Below the band 15 the shell again curves outwardly to form a shoulder 17 and then curves inwardly to a finished ed e 18, which as nearly as practicable makes contact with the sides of the shade 14 so as to steady the shade and prevent it from wabbling. The finished edge 18 is approximately on a level with the lower end of the lamp socket.
Inside of the bearing of the lip of the shade upon the shoulder 13, the shell is provided with ventilating openings 19, which afford ventilation for the heated air arising from the electric lamp. The shell 12 is screw threaded at its upper end and engages with the screw threads 4: of the top 3 so that the socket cover and shade holder can be divided at this point by unscrewing the shell 12 and withdrawing it downwardly, thus giving access to the set screw 10 of the socket and enabling the socket to be removed without removing the top 3 from the fixture, and also without removing the socket enabling the socket shell to be removed to give access to the wiring.
What I claim is:
1. An electric lamp socket cover and shade holder wherein are combined a top adapted to be secured to the fixture and to receive a lamp socket centrally therein, a depending shell covering the socket and removably secured to the top, the joint being located so as to give access to the socket holding devices, substantially as set forth.
2. An electric lamp socket cover and shade holder, wherein are combined a top 3 having a centrally depending sleeve 6 and a shell 12 adapted to cover the socket, and removably secured to the top so as to give access to the socket holding set screw, substantially as set forth.
3. An electric lamp socket cover and shade holder, comprising a depending shell provided with a shoulder 13 for seating the lip of the shade, an approximately vertical band 15 below the shoulder 13 for carrying the set screws 16 and an inwardly extending lower end to support the sides of the shade below the set screws, substantially as set forth.
4. An electric lamp socket cover and shade holder wherein are combined a top 3 having a centrally depending sleeve 6 and a screw threaded lower end, a shell 12 screw threaded to the top and provided with a shoulder 13 and approximately vertical band 15 and an inwardly turned lower edge and the set screws 16 passing through the band 15, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 15th day of February, 1910.
GEORGE CAS'SIDY.
Witnesses:
HENRY F. CONRAD, JOHN L. LOTSOH.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 962,076, granted June 21, 1910,
upon the application of George W. Cassidy, of East Orange, New J ersey, for an improvement in Electric-Lamp Socket-Covers and Shade-Holders, an error appears in the drawings requiring correction as follows In Fig. 1, the screw-thread at the top of the figure should appear without the notch, as shown in Fig. 2; and
that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the seine may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
Signed and sealed this 19th day of July, A. D., 1910.

Acting Commissioner of Patents.
