Description

:0. w. TRAVIS. Cultivator. No. 96,167. Patented Oct. 26, 1869- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DUDLEY WV. TRAVIS, OF ENFIELD, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 96;]67, dated October 26, 1869; antcdated October 12, 1869.
T0 at whom it may concern Be it known that I, DUDLEY W. TRAVIS, of Enfield, Tompkins county, New York, have invented an Improved Corn-Cultivator; and I hereby declare the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters thereon.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my corn-cu1- tivator; Fig. 2, a View looking down on it, with seat removed; and Fig. 3, a top View of the adjustable seat.
-My object is to improve the action of the plow and hoes attached to the frame by certain devices, and to vary-the seat to suit various operators, this being somewhat supplementary to a patent recently granted to me. This I accomplish, as is apparent farther on.
In Fig. 1, A is the carriage, consisting of wheels. axle, pole for the horses, and other appendages. To the pole, in front of the axle and just in rear of the horses, is attached the strong crossbar B, and hinged to it are as many connecting rods or bars 0 as there are longitudinal pieces D to the cultivator-frame. The posts E E from the bars F F hold the adjustable h'oes and plows G and H, and the seat I, adjustable by the bolt I, is fast to the spring-support J, and has the rear spring, K, bearing on the frame-tie F, and aids its action.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the same parts are indicated by the same letters.
The uses of the bars or rods 0 are to allow the necessary play of the plows for the inequalities of the ground, and enable the operator, by his feet on the frame, to adjust the plows to the row, as well as by the lever L raise them up in turning and when not in use, and the spring K and adjustable seat to make pressure on the back of the plow-frame by the weight of the operator. Other uses are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
I claim 1. The combination of the adjustable plows G and H, frame D F F, and rods 0, substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of the lever L, in combination with the plows, frame, rods, and carriage, as set forth.
3. The construction of the spring K, in combination with a carriage plow-frame, as set forth.
4. The combination of the whole made by the two-wheeled carriage A, cross-bars l3, rods 0, longitudinal pieces D, posts E, adjustable plows G and H, seat I, spring K, and lever L, arranged and operating together substantially as set forth.
D. IV. TRAVIS.
