Description

M. QUINN.
Car Coupling.
Patented Oct. 26, 1869l MFEYERS. PHOTO LTHoGn gstelltl @Wire MATTHEW QUINN, OF WATAGA, ILLINOIS.
Leners Patent No. 96,146, dated october 26,1869.
The Schedule'referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of'the same.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, MATTHEW QUINN, of Wataga, in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Coimling; and I do hereby declare that .the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledv in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of my im'- proved coupling, taken through the line x x, fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is a side view of the same.
My invention has for its objecttofurnish animproved self-coupling car-coupling, designed more especially for freight-cars, but equally' applicable to other cars, and Whichshall be so constructed and arranged asdto convenient-ly couple cars differing in height; au
It consists inthe construction and combination of various parts of the coupling, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the bumper-head, whichis made with two.
mouths placed the one directly above the other, and each being made hopper-shaped, so that when the cars are run together, the coupling-link may enter one or the other of said mouths, according to the height of the other car.
The two-mouthed bumper-head A may be made in one piece, or the upper mouth may be made in a separate piece, and securely attached to the lower part.
The latter construction is used when it is desired to attach my improvement to old bumpers, but-in making new bumper-heads the former construction is preferred.
The lower incline a of the lower mouth of the bumper-head is made detachable, and is secured in place by a bolt, or bolts, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, so
place by pins passing horizontally through the sides of the bumper-head and through the gudgeons of the said pins or catches B, asshown in iig. 1.
The draught strain upon the pins or catches B is sustained by thesliding bars C, which pass in through the side of the bumper-head and cross the slots in which .the said pins or catches work, and against which rest shoulders formed upon the front and rear edges of the said pins or catches B, the front and rear edges of vthe pins or catches B being so formed that the said pins or catches may beraised freely bythe entering link D, to couple the cars, the outer ends of the rear slides O being pivoted to facilitate this.
The outer ends of the forward slides O are attached.
in thef'.centre of whichy passes a. guide-rod or pin, G,
rigidly attached to the bumper-head, and provided withaJ spring catch, H, which, by pressing againsifthe bar F, holds the slides O in place, and prevents them from working out while the cars are coupled.
To uncouple the cars, the' slides G are drawn out, which allows the link I) to be withdrawn by drawing the pin or catch B forward;
Upon the rear edges of the lower part of the pins or catches B is formed a notch, to hold the link D until it has entered the other bumper-head.
li'aving thus described my invention,
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The detachable incline a', in combination with the bumper-head A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the coupling-pins or catches B and slides C with each other, and with the bumperhead A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth 3. The combination of the coupling-pins or catches B, slides C, bars E, connecting-bar F, and gnide-bar or pin G, provided with a spring catch, H, with each other, and with the bumper-head A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
MATTHEW QUINN.
