Description

pa e harm.
JOHN MCNEIGHT, WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 96,135, dated October 26, 1869.
COAL-STOVE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN McNnIeH'r, of Wakefield, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Gas-Utilizing Stove; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the front half of a stove, in perspective.
Figure 2 represents same, with top lifted and sections broken away,.showing my improvement.
The object of my invention is to produce a stove in which the gas generated from the coal maybe utilized, by its being made to burn, thus contributing heat in addition to that ordinarily gained. By this means I am enabled to save fuel, or to receive increased benefit from same amount of fuel.
I The nature of my invention consists in a gas-ring. or screen about the upper part of the fire-pot of a stove, the fire-pot having grated sides, and cold-air passage, by means of which oxygen is admitted to mingle with the hydrogen of the coal. The nature of my invention further consists in arrangement of the dumper, by which the fire-pot and space outside of it are relieved from coal, ashes, 830.
In the drawings- A is the top of the stove, provided with holes for kettles, as is usual.
B is the fire-pot, and is situated in the centre of the front half of stove. (Only front half of a stove is shown.)
The tire-pot is grated, b b, or it may be perforated with holes, b.
' Surrounding the top of fire-pot is gas-ring 0, having perforations d d.
E E are coldair passages in front of stove, and lead under ring 0, but above plate I, which surrounds firebox at the bottom.
K K are draught-holes, leading under fire-box B and plate P.-
D'D are dumpers, and act with dumper D to firebox. They are operated by rod S.
H H serve as dampers and as dumpers. Operated by rod S.
L is the bottom of the stove.
m m, doors, in front of base.
The philosophy of my improved stove, and it is proved by actual experiment, is, that the combustion of coal in the fire-box generates gases, which, in ordinary cases, are lost, but, by the gases coming in contact with a fresh supply of oxygen through the cold-air passages E E, there becomes a perfect combustion,
which would otherwise pass off unconsumed.
The gas-ring 0 being at the upper part of the firepot, but having a space above it, the action of draughts 'i i-in the back of the stove brings the gases to the surface of ring 0 in jets, through perforations d (I. Here it is ignited, and assists in supplying heat for the purpose desired.
The openings K K supply air beneath the fire-box, which supply can be increased by opening doors on m Thus, it is seen that the space between perforated ring 0 and plate P, with dumpers D D, is a chamber for the manufacture of gas.
The smoke of the fire passes off through i i. to the pipe and chimney. I
The dumpers, D D and D, act upon one rod, so that the ashes within the fire-pot, and whatever collects outside, can all be dumped at once. H, the direct draught up through the fire-boxis diminished.
The passages i i can be supplied with dampers or not, as desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure.
by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The gas-mixingchamber, formed by gas-ring c and plate P, with dumpers D D, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of gas-mixing chamber, described, with gas-ring c, asset forth.
3. The combination of gas -mixing chamber, described, fire-box B, andgas-ring c, substantially as herein set forth.
4. The combination of fire-box B, ring 0, gas-mixing chamber, described, cold-air passages E E and K K, and draught-passages i i, as herein set forth.
5. The combination ofdumpers D D and D' with fire-box B and plate P, as herein described.
6. A gas-utilizing stove, formed by the combination of all the parts named above, arranged and operating substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
JOHN 'MCNEIGHT.
