CARBON-PAPER HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J line '7, 1910.
Application filed July 19, 1909. Serial No. 508,459.
tion which will permit the holding of one or' more carbon sheets in proper positions with relation to the sheets of paper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction for facilitating the introduction into the machine of the holder with any suitable number of carbons and sheets 0 paper.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an enlarged detail section of one embodiment of the holder in open position; Fig. 2 is a like sectional view showing a sheet of carbon within the holder illustrated in Fig. 1 ready for insertion in the typewriter; Fig. 3 is a similar section showing another position of the holder illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section of another embodiment of the invention; Fig. 5 is a similar section of the same embodiment showing the manner in which the carbon sheet is first secured; Fig. 6 is a similar section of the same embodiment showing the final position of the parts preparatory to introduction into the.
machine; Fig. 7 is a detail planview of the holder shown in Figs. 4: to 6; Fig. 8 is a detail plan view of the same embodiment with a'portion of the flap broken away to expose the backing sheet or member below the flap; Fig. 9 is a detail view of said embodiment illustrating the manner in which i the flap is, interlocked with the backing sheet or member; and Fig. 10 is a detail plan view of the embodiment shown in Figs. 1
In the embodiment of the invention'illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 and 10, there is employed a backing sheet or member 1 which preferably is slightly larger in size than the carbon sheets and is made of any suitable material such as heavy or stifi' paper. Hinged along its outer edge to this backing sheet at 2 preferably ,along a line parallel with the upper edge of the backing sheet, is a flap 3 which extends over said backing sheet and has on the under side a device for securing the carbon sheet 4:. stance, this device comprises a fiap- 5 with a hinge 6 parallel with the hinge 2 and in proximity to the free edge of the flap 3 so that the free edge of the flap 5 Will, when the latter is moved to lie parallelwith the flap 3, lie substantially at the hinge 2.
In order to facilitate the introduction of the carbon holder into the typewriting machine, it may be provided with an introducing member 7 projecting from the backing sheet 1 beyond the carbon securing means formed by flap 3 and flap 5. Preferably this embodiment of the invention 'is constructed from a single sheet of material which is folded upon itself at 8 and has the portions in proximity to the fold secured In this intogether by an adhesive or other means to provide the introducing member 7 with the backing sheet 1 lying on one side thereof and the main flap 3 on the other side thereof, the sheet being then creased at 2 to provide the hinge and having the flap 5 secured to its under surface by a flange 9 or other suitable means. To use this embodiment, one or more carbon sheets 4 are placed upon the backing sheet l so that their upper edges lie close to the hinge 6 when the parts are in the positions illustrated in Fig. 3. The flap 5 is then dropped so that its free edge lies substantially at the hinge 2 as shown in Fig. 1, when the'flap 3 may be folded onto the backing sheet 1. The free edge of the flap 5 will cause the carbon sheet or sheets to fold in the manner shown in Fig. 2 and thus effectively secure said sheet against movement. Sheets of paper may now be introduced in proper position in the holder and the holder with the carbon sheets and sheets of paper placed within the machine, the portion 7 facilitating the introduction as it is of uniform thickness and does not vary with the number of sheets used.
9 no introducin member is employed and the sheet material is creased at 2 to provide the flap 3" on one side and the backing sheet 1 on the other. On the under side sheet material at 6 upon itself in the manner shown in Fig. 5. With this arrangement the free edge of the flap 5 lies substantially at the fold 2 of the flap 3 so that -When the latter is bent over the backing sheet 1 after the carbon sheet 10 has been introduced in the manner shown in Fig. 5, the carbon sheet will be folded in the man ner shown in Fig. 6, thus securely holding said carbon against movement.
In both embodiments of the invention there may employed some means'for securin the flap 3 and 3 against movement in its folded position. Preferably this means is located at the two ends of the fla and comprises tongues 11 extending towar each other and formed by outwardly converging slits 12 in the backing sheet to receive beneath them tongues 13 extending away from each other and formed by outwardlydiverging slits 14 in' the end sides of'the flap 3 or 3. This arrangement permits the interlocking of the flap 3 or 3 with the backing sheet with a great deal of ease and at the same time does not add materially to the cost of manufacturing the article.
A carbon sheet holder constructed in ac cordance with this invention is very simple to manipulate; the cost of manufacture thereof is not great, and if made of'stron paper, it will last a very long time.
I claim as my invention:
y 1. A carbon sheet holder comprising a backing sheet, a flap extending over the same and having its outer edge hinged to the sheet, and a carbon paper securing device on the under side of the flap having a free edge located substantially at the hinge of the flap t-o cause the carbon paper to fold at this point. e
2. A -carbon sheet holder comprising a backing sheet, a flap extending over the same and hinged along its outer edge to the sheet and a hinged flap carried by the underslde 0f the first named flap and having its free edge located substantially at the hinge of sald first named flap.-
the first named flap.
4. A carbon sheet holder comprising a backing sheet, a hinged flap extending over the backing sheet, a carbon securing flap carried by the under surface of the firstnamed flap and having its free edge located substantially at the hinge of the first-named flap, and an introducing member lying on the outer side of the hin e of the flap.
*5. A carbon sheet holder comprising a single sheet of material folded upon itself, the portions inproximity to the fold being secured together to provide-an introducing member and the portion on one side of the fold beyond the secured portion acting as a backing sheet while that on the other side of the fold beyond the secured portion acts as a hinged flap overlying the backing sheet.
