ALBERT OMAR TURNER, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO FRED R. Sll'IITI-I, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS.
SAW-SET.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT OMAR TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw sets, and the object of the invention is to produce an article of this character', comprising a stationary and a movable member, each of which being provided with a detachable block, and each of said blocks having their edges provided with angularly projecting fingers and recesses between the lingers, the fingers of one of the jaws being adapted to coaot with the recesses of the block of the opposite jaw, and the fingers at each of the corners of the blocks being of various sizes to agree with the various sizes of the teeth of saws, whereby the blocks may be utilized for setting the various sizes of teeth as well as setting a plurality of teeth at a single operation.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their arrangement in operative combination, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw set, partly in section, constructed in accordance with the l' Fig. 2 1s a top plan view 5 present invention. of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the toothed block. Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 designates the stationary member of the improved saw set. This member 1 comprises a body portion 2, provided with a rectangular head 3 and a handle t. The body 2 is provided with side walls 5 communicating with the rear wall of the hollow rectangular head 3. The front and rear walls of the head 3 are provided with a downwardly extending portion or lip, each of which is provided with alining threaded openings adapted for the reception of the threaded members or set screws 6 and 7 for the purpose of leveling or placing set on saw by simply tightening or loosening said screws 6 and 7 against saw blade. Teeth on Specification of Letters Patent.

blocks 12 being the same length as notches or recesses in which they coact. Teeth on blocks having a tendency to set a number of saw teeth one way and the same number the opposite way, making it necessary to have said set plumb, or at right angle with saws as shown in plan with set screws 6 and 7. Said screws 6 and 7 shall be tightened against saws in operation. The front wall of the head 3 is projected rearwardly a suitable distance to provide the side extensions 8, and these extensions are provided with threaded openings adapted for engagement with the threaded members 9 and 10. The front wall of the head 3 has its rear face provided with an inclined transverse cut away portion 11, adapted for t-he reception of the inclined teeth of a block 12. This block 12 is preferably squared in cross-section, and is of a length equal to the distance between the inner side walls of the head 3.
The ends of the blocks are provided with suitable annular recesses adapted, for the reception of the threaded elements 9 and 10, whereby the block is effectively secured in position upon the head 3. Tt will be noted by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the inner face of the front wall of the head 3 bears snugly against the face of the block 12 with which it coacts, thus providing an eifective brace for the block when engaged in the operation of setting the teeth of a saw, as will hereinafter be described.
Positioned between the sides 5 of the body 2 is the slidable member 12 of the improved set. This member 12 has its front end provided with a U;shaped enlargement, the arms of which are provided with suitable threaded adapted for the reception of threaded elements 13. Adapted to be positioned between the U-shaped arms is a block similar to the block 12 previously described. This block is also provided upon its side with suitable annular recesses which are adapted for the reception of the threaded elements 13, and by which the block is securely retained in position. The front wall of the sliding element 12 is of a similar contour with the face of the block which it engages, and the lower portion of the wall is provided with an annular cut away portion 14 adapted to serve as a seat for the projecting fingers of the block. The sliding member 12 is provided with a suitable eye 15 at its rear end, and this eye is adapted for the reception mally retracted so as to position the blocks a suitable, distance away from each other to allow for the ready insertion of a saw blade between the blocks.
The sides 5 are provided with suitable upstanding ears, provided with alining open-Y ings adapted for the reception of a p-intle 18, b-y which an operating handle is secured between the ears. This handle 19 is provided with a downwardly extending knuckle 20, adapted for engagement with a suitable cut away portion 21 provided transversely of the sliding member 12. By this arrangement, it will be noted that as the handle 19 Y and the ngersr are adapted to be of dierentY sizes at each of the corners of the blocks so as to provide for the dilerent sizes of teeth of a saw which they are adapted to set. It is tol be understood that the teeth of one of the blocks are adapted to coact with the recesses of the opposite blockwhen the device is in operation. By this construction it will be noted that saws having different size teeth may be readily set vby simplyadjusting the blocks tovbring the sizes of the fingers corresponding with the teeth of the saw into operative position upon the set.
' In orderto adjust set on saws of different number of teeth to the inch, owing to the difference in vthe length of the teeth in the p different numbered saws, there is` provided Vward extension of sides 3,
in track or slide provided in rear and formarked 8, by means of set screws 23.
' Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a device for the purpose set forth, a member provided with a substantially rectangular hollow headr and having trans.
versely depending offset arms, and being also provided with a depending handle, the said handle having its upper face provided with a longitudinally extending groove, a movable member within the groove, and pro-V jecting within the hollow head ofthe first member, means for normally forcing the sliding member away from the head of the first member, a handle connected with the first member and adapted to engage the sliding member to `force. the same within the hollowhead of the irst member, the de.- pending portions of the first member being provided with threaded openings, threaded members for vthese openings,i a block connected with the end of the sliding member,
a block connected with the head of the firstmember, means for removably securing the blocks to bothV of the members, each of said blocks being substantially rectangular in formation and having their edges provided with alternating teeth and recesses, the teeth of one of the blocks being adapted to be received within the recess of the opposite block, and means for sustainingV the blocks in horizontal alinement with each other.
In testimony whereof I aX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT OMAR TURNER. Witnesses:
M. E. SARGENT, W. T. MILLER.
