BENJAMIN F. MILLER, OF DIXON, ILLINOIS.
FEED-TROUGH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dixon, county of Lee, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Troughs, of-which the following is a specification.
My invention relates .to feed troughs and the object of my invention is to provide a trough of such character which will facili-' tate the hygienic feeding of horses, cattle or the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a trough as mentioned which will be especially applicable for arrangement in a manger, a still further object being the production of a feed trough which will be strong, durable and simple of construction hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
' With these objects in view my invention consists in a feed trough characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a manger in which is provided a feed trough embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a manger or other suit-able support. Provided upon the inner surfaces of the front and rear walls 2 and 3 respectively of the construction 1, and adjacent the upper edges thereof, are cleats 4:. Having its extremities loosely supported upon said cleats is a rectangular frame 5 formed of metal, wood or any other suitable material, but preferably of the former. Formed upon the upper surface of said frame adjacent the rearward edge thereof are forwardly projecting hooked projections or keepers 6 the forward end portions of which extend preferably parallel to the upper surface of said frame as shown. Arranged in said frame, the same being supported therein by having a peripheral flange 7 provided at the upper edge thereof resting upon the upper surface of said frame, is a preferably rectangular trough proper or feed receptacle 8 formed preferably although not necessarily, of a sin- Specification of Letters Patent.

gle piece of sheet metal. In order to eflect a snug and neat connection between the trough flange 7 and supporting frame thereof, the upper surface of the latter adjacent the inner edge thereof is preferably formed with a seat or counter sink 9 adapted to snugly receive said flange. Suitably secured to and laterally projecting from the upper surface of the rearward end portion of the member 8 are studs 10 so positioned that, when said trough is properly arranged in said frame, the same will engage the keepers 6 as clearly shown.
With such construction the trough it is evident may readily be swung upon the studs 10 as a pivot, to an inverted position rearward of the manger, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1; or if desired may be entirely detached because of the peculiar construction of the keepers. Because of the first named characteristic the ready removal of waste such as corncobs or the like from the trough, may be effected without having to handle the same. By having the feed room located directly rearward of the manger any unconsumed feed may with such construction be readily returned thereto. And because of the latter characteristic and also because of the detachable connection between the supporting frame 5 and the cleats 1, the ready cleansing of the device is evidently facilitated.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims. And although I have designed my device with special reference to its application to mangers I use the same in connection with any other construction to which it is applicable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, with a manger having permanent sides, of supporting cleats arranged in one end thereof, a frame detachably mounted upon said cleats, a trough mounted in said frame having a peripheral flange engaging the upper surface thereof, and a detachable swinging connection between said frame and said trough, substantially as described.
arranged in one end thereof, a frame having its extremities resting upon said cleats, a trough mounted in said frame having a peripheral flange engaging the upper surface thereof, keepers provided upon the upper surface of said frame, and studslaterally projecting from the upper edge of said trough engaging said keepers whereby a detachable swinging connection between said trough and said frame is effected.
3. The combination, with a manger having permanent sides,v of cleats provided upon the inner surface of the front and rear walls of said manger adjacent the upper edges thereof, a rectangular frame havin its ex tremities loosely supported upon said cleats,
flange, studs laterally projecting from the rearward extremity of the upper edgeof said trough, and forwardly projecting hooked projections provided upon said frame engaging said studs whereby a detachable swinging connection between saidtrough and said;
frame is efiected, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. r
