FRANK L. HARMON, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS.
STRINGED MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.
Application filed July 7, 1905. Serial No. 268,741.
I To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, FRANK L. HARMON,
of. Beverly, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Stringed Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. g p
The object of this invention, is to attain means for obtaining more freedom of vibration of a resonant body of a violin, andof other resonant devices in other stringed musical instruments, than has yet been attained.
The drawings show'a new violin in plan in Figure 1, and in side elevation in Fig. 2;
Said resonant body A cross-shaped steel support B, neck C and tin er-board D fast to said support, tail-piece 5, its string I on stud H fast in said support, pegs J, chinrest 0 and shoulder-pad N fast to said support, strings on the tail-piece and pegs, and bridge F, between the strings and the outside of said resonant device, are all shown combined. Support B is secured to the edges of the body A, or resonant device, by screws E preferably fast in said body and loose in the holes in the support B. This connection to said body, at said edges only, together with the fact that the ends of said body are free to vibrate, and arenot held from vibratingby the hand shoulder and chin, when other violins are, shows that the applicant has attained the object of his -invention.
Therefore, applicant claims his invention as follows:
1. In strin ed musical instruments the combination 0 a resonant device, a support 1 connected therewith and supporting said resonant device, and allowing the ends of said resonant device to be free to vibrate, means of attachment for strings connected with said support, strings attached to said means of attachment, and a brid e between the strings and the outside 0 said resonant device.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 1910.
2. In stringed musical instruments the combination of: a resonant device, a support connected therewith and supporting said resonant device, and allowing the ends of said resonant device tobe free to vibrate, said support comprising neck, finger-board, chinrest, shoulder-pad, and means of attachment for strings, strings attached to said means of attachment, and a bridge between the strings and the outside of said resonant device.
3. In stringed musical instruments the" combination of: a hollow resonant device, a
device between the ends of said resonant de-v vice,'and allowing the ends of said resonant device to be free to vibrate, means of attachment for strings connected with said support, strings attached to said means of attachment, and abridge between the strings and the outside of said resonant device.
- 5. In stringed musical instruments the combination of: a hollow resonant device, a support connected with said hollow resonant device between the ends of said resonant device and' supporting said resonant device,
and allowing the ends of said resonant device to be free to vibrate, said support comrising neck, finger-board, chin-rest, shouler-pad, and means of attachment for strings, strings attached to said means of attachment, and a bridge between said strings and the outside of said resonant device.
