Be it known that I, RICHARD O. FRiTsoHE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Holding Down Vests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments to vests, for the purpose of holding the vest down in relation to the trousers, to maintain the normal position of the lower front portion of the vest over the waistband portion of the trousers.
It is well known that under certain conditions of wear the lower front portion of a vest has a tendency to rise, thus destroying the appearance of neatness or fit and producing an unsightly condition or exposing the waistband of the trousers. This is particularly so with dress vests, which are out very low and therefore have a comparatively small front body to assist in maintaining proper position, and when the abdomen of the wearer is large or when stooping or other irregular positions are assumed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved attachment which will effectively obviate the objections above noted and maintain the normal proper position of the vest, by efliciently resisting the tendency to rise and holding the lower front portion of the vest down in connection with the waistband portion of the trousers, and which will be very convenient in its manipulation and use, especially in its attachment to and detachment from the trousers.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspec tive view showing the inner side of a vest and trousers having the attachment in operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view, taken on the line mw, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front face view of a vest and trousers, with parts broken away to show features of the attachment at the in ner side. Fig. 4: is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the lower portion of the attachment, illustrating its detachment from the trousers.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referrin to the drawings, 1 designates the lower front portion of a vest, and 2 the waistband portion of the trousers. The attachment is carried by the vest, at its inner side and preferably near its front buttonedge, and depends downwardly therefrom to a point of engagement with the waistband portion of the trousers at the inner face thereof and preferably near the front flyedge. The attachment comprises a bodystrip or web, 3, carrying at its upper and lower terminals a plate having an approximately flat or smooth unobstructed outer surface, t, whereby the attachment will occupy a comparatively flat position between the vest and trousers and the shirt and wear upon or damage to the shirt will be obviated, the upper of which plates, 5, carries at its inner side a safety-pin means for secure attachment to the vest so that the web cannot be disengaged from its depending position by movement in any direction, and the lower of which plates, 6, carries at its inner side means which will engage the trousers by upward tension and will disengage the trousers when the lower plate 6 is pressed downwardly.
The upper means of the body-strip or web, whereby the attachment is securely carried by the vest, may be of any suitable construction, but I prefer to employ that herein illustrated, in which a continuous length of wire, secured to the inner face of the plate 5, forms a safety-pin construction embodying the coil, 7, projecting pin, 8, and catch or shield, 9, and also forms the connection for the web by having a main arm constituting a loop, 10. The lower means of the body-strip or web, whereby the attachment is readily engaged with or disengaged from the trousers, may be of any suitable construction that will resist upward tension, but I prefer to employ that herein illustrated, in which a continuous length of wire, secured to the inner face of the plate 6, forms upwardly-projecting pins, 11-11, and a top-loop, 12, constituting the connection for the web, the wire being bent so that its central portion forms the loop 12 and its end portions form downwardly-extending securing arms, 14-14, connected to the plate, and the upwardlyprojecting terminal pins 11 extending from said arms. The upwardly-projecting pins of the lower trousers-connection means of the body-strip of the attachment effectively resist upward tension, and a locking means is provided so that a release of this tension during movement of the wearer under ordinary conditions of operative use will not permit of accidental disengagement of the attachment from the trousers. In the preferred form of this locking means, there is also effected the protection of the 7 pinpoints so that they will not wear upon or damage the trousers, and an automatic unlocking when the lower plate 6 is forced downwardly for disengagement by pressure, which preferred construction consists of a cam-plate, 15, having a main leaf, 16, adapted to project downwardly over the upper pointed ends of the pins 11, and an extension, 17, projecting at an angle to the main leaf and adapted to bind against the inner face of the plate 6 to lock the camplate with its leaf 16 in normal operative position. This cam-plate is fulcrumed intermediately of the leaf 16 and extension 17, preferably by means of lateral gudgeons, 18-18, j ournaled in extensions, 19-19, projecting at the side edges of the plate 6, and when in locked position the leaf 16 is at a slight angle or incline with relation to the pin-points. With this construction, when the pins 11 have been engaged with the trousers, the cam-plate is pressed downwardly so that its leaf 16 extends over the projecting pin-points and rests between the latter and the trousers (as shown in Fig. 2), in which position it is locked against accidental movement under any ordinary conditions of use, and when it is desired to separate the vest attachment from the trousers it is only necessary to press the lower plate 6 downwardly, during which movement the lower edge of the leaf 16 will, by reason of the slightly inclined position of the leaf, be engaged by the trousers and the leaf will be lifted upwardly (as shown in Fig. 4), thus effecting an automatic unlocking of the cam-plate.
The body-strip or web 3 is preferably elastic, so that such play or movement asmay be required between the vest and trousers is permitted in the operative use of the attachment, and the webis also preferably adjustable longitudinally to tighten or loosen the connection between the vest and trousers or otherwise adapt the attachment to conditions of use. A convenient construction for this adjustment is that herein shown, in which the top portion of the web is slidably connected with the loop 10 of the top plate 5 and the lower end of the web is secured to the loop 12 of the lower plate 6, as at 20, while the other end of the web is secured, as at 21, to a buckle, 22, slidably mounted upon the web.
The operation and advantages of my invention and improvements will be readily understood. The attachment is applied to the vest so that it is carried thereby and will securely retain its connection therewith against either upward or downward or lateral movement? or strain, this being accomplished by the upper means carried by the topplate 5, which permit of secure connection with the vest and detachment therefrom when required. The body-strip or web of the attachment is thus maintained in de- I pending position on the vest (as shown in Fig. 1) and the free lower end of the attachment thus suspended can be quickly and conveniently connected with the waistband portion of the trousers when it is desired to retain the vest against rising movement, and can be detached from the trousers when it is desired to remove the vest, this being accomplished by the means carried by the lower plate 6. The herein-described trousers-engaging means at the free lower end of the suspended vest-attachment are simply hooked into position so that the upwardlyprojecting pins 11 engage the trousers by upward tension and thus effectively resist the tendency of the vest to rise, and when in this operative connection the engagement is retained while there is any release of the upward tension of the body-strip or web 3 by the action of the locking and pin-protecting plate 15 when the leaf 16 thereof is brought to the position shown in Fig. 2, while to disengage the attachment from the trousers and automatically unlock the connection it is only necessary to press downwardly upon the lower plate 6 as shown in Fig. 4.
By reason of the improved construction herein shown and described, the attachment is capable of convenient adjustment with relation to variable conditions between the vest and trousers, and it can be also adjusted to suit variable conditions while it is in operative connection as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be obvious that the attachment can also be employed for holding down the shirt bosom or shirt back, by suspending the bodystrip or web in depending position from the front or back of theshirt, by connection of the attachment-means carried by the top plate 5 with the shirt, and then engaging the upward-tension means of the lower plate 6 with the trousers as above described. 7
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the detail construction and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, as it is manifest that variations and modifications therein may be resorted to, in the adaptation of my invention to varying conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims. Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1. An attachment for holding down vests or other apparel in connection with trousers,
. comprising a depending body-strip or web having suspending means at its top, means carried at the lower free end of said web for engagement with the trousers by upward tension and release therefrom by downward pressure, and means for locking said lower engagement means against release when the web is free from upward tension, said look ing means having a portion projecting over and beyond said engagement means and adapted to engage with the trousers for automatic actuation by bearing against the trousers to automatically release said engagement means when downward pressure is exerted.
2. An attachment for holding down vests or other apparel in connection with trousers, comprising a depending body-strip or web having suspending means at its top, a plate carried at the lower free end of said web, upwardly-projecting pins carried by said plate at its inner face for engagement with the trousers by upward tension, and a camplate mounted upon said pin-carrying plate and projecting at the inner face thereof downwardly over and beyond the top points of said upwardly-projecting pins and constituting locking means for resisting release of said upwardly-projecting pins when the web is free from upward tension and for automatically releasing said pins by engagement of said projecting portion with the trousers when downward pressure is exerted upon said pin-carrying plate.
