Description

WILLIAM M. HAMILTON, 0F JACKSONVILLEHILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 96,000, dated October 19, 1869.
Man-
IMPRQVEMENT IN PUMPS` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part of the lime.
To all whom fit may concern: l
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. HAMILTON, of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgamand in th'e State of Illinois, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvement in Pump-Plunger; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clearand exact description thereof', reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a pumpplunger, which can be made to expand as. fast as it wears olf by use, and thus last a great deal longer than any. plunger" now in use.
In' order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed tol describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-7- Figure 1 is a vertical section, and
Figure 2, a bottom view of the upper portion of the plunger.
A represents a pipe, of suitable length, having screwthreads cut on its outer side and at its upper edge, provided with a flange, B, of circular shape.
To the upper side of the flange B, four arms, G C, are secured, which are joined together above the centre ofthe pipe A, and form a hole, into which the rod to work the plunger with is fastened.
On top of the .tlange or plate B, .the valve D, which closes the opening of the pipe A, is placed.
Around the pipe A, on the under side ofthe ange B, isplaced 'acylinder, E, tapering on the inside, as
-shown in fig. 1, the upper end being wider than the lower. This cylinder is made in sections, as seen in fig. 2, to allow of expansion.
On the lower end of the pipe A is tted another pipe, F, provided with screw-threads at the upper end, on its inner side, to screw on the pipe A.
The upper end Iof thel pipe Fis made tapering on the side, increasing in width or circumference'from the upper end downward a suitable distance, so. that by screwing this pipe on to the pipe A, the outer inclined surface of the same will act on the sectional cylinder E, and spread or expand it.
A series of leather rings, G G, is placed around the cylinder E, said rings being out open and these openings placed alternately opposite the centres of the sections of the cylinder E, allows of expansion, and at the same time prevents leaking. i
Above and below the leather rings G G, I place a rubber ring, H, which is not out open, -but allows expansion notwithstanding.
The rings G G and H H are pressed irmlytogether against the flange B, by means of an annular plate or flange, I, of suitable size, which is screwed on to the .lower end of the pipe F, this end of said pipe being for that purpose provided with screw-threads on the outside.
It will readily be seen that a plunger thus constructed can be easily expanded at will by merely screwing the pipe F higher up on the pipe A, fwhich,
acting on the cylinder E, presses its sections outward,
forcing the rings G and l-I outward. Said rings being, however, pressed together by the flange I, all leakage is prevented.
When other plunger-s wear o, they have .to be taken off' and repaired, causing both' inconvenience and expense, while this plunger can Abe expanded almost in an instant, and be as good as new.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Y AWhat I claim as new, and desire secure by Let- The combination of the pipe A, flange B, sectional tapering cylinder E, tapering pipe F,.rings-G G and H H, and lian ge or burr I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes 'herein set frth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 21st day of January, 1869.
WM. M. HAMILTON.
I Witnesses:
J. H. Sucres, Jos. R. AsKEw.
