TELEGRAPH-POLE AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Buooemon IIASKELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraph-Poles and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufiusture of metallic poles or columns for the support of overhead wires, and more especially to a type of such poles wherein a series, of preferably three legs or uprights are secured in properly spaced apart, converging relation to each other by transverse bands suitably secured thereto at proper intervals.
The features of invention in the present instance have to do with improved means and devices for securely and rigidly assembling said bands with the uprights in a manner to attain great strength and without the use of bolts or like fastening devices which would have a tendency to weaken the structure.
The invention will be clearly understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and will thereafter be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to said drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pole constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section, through the upright members of the pole the same showing the improved fastening means and the bands at one leg also in section. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section through one leg showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the filling block as used with the form of construction shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective showing the form of filling block employed with the construction of Fig. 3.
The uprights or legs 1 are preferably formed into U-shape from plate material and the bands 2 are likewise of sheet or plate material made into substantially triangular form with suitable pockets at the corners to receive the uprights. As shown said bands are dished or corrugated as at 3, to attain greater rigidity thereof. The pockets or recesses formed in the corners of the bands 2 aforesaid are closed by straps l which abut against the band adjacent the corners of said pockets as shown and are se- Specification of Letters Patent.

curely welded or otherwise joined in molecular union thereto at 5 and 6. It will be seen that the space thus left within the pocket is of a size to snugly receive the U- shaped section of the upright in the form shown in Fig. 2 and that the same is true in the form shown in Fig. 3 except for a small space adjacent the ends of the upright which is filled as hereinafter described. It will be noticed that in both forms I form an outward dish or bulge in the strap 4, centrally thereof as at 7, which feature has utility in a manner now to be explained.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 1, a filling block 8 is fashioned of a form and size to snugly fit the hollow space bounded by the interior of the leg 1 and the strap 4, and the same has formed on the flat face thereof a central projecting wedge portion 9. It will now be readily seen that when the said filling block is introduced and driven into place as shown in F i 2, the wedge portion 9 will fill the dishe portion 7 of band 4: and said upright and band will be forced into secure and rigid engagement. A flange 10 may be formed on top of said block to prevent accidental displacement thereof and for convenience in manipulation.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 5 the filling member 8' leaves the space within the sides of the leg open and being of a slab form as shown exerts its clamping action between the ends of the leg and the strap 4. In this form the wedge formation 9' co-acts with the dished portion 7 in like manner as before described.
It will thus be seen that in both forms of the device there is not only a crowding of the leg 1 backward into the bottom of the pocket therefor, but by reason of the coaction of the wedge portion 9 with the strap 1, said strap will cause a transverse drawing-in pressure to be exerted by the portions of the bands 2 adjacent the ends of the U-shaped leg, thus clamping the same firmly at all points and constituting a very strong and substantial structure.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A pole comprising longitudinal members, transverse bands therefor said bands having pockets formed therein to receive said members, straps secured to said bands adjacent said pockets, and means constructed and arranged to react against said straps and longitudinal members to cause Wedging action and clamping engagement of said members and straps.
2. A pole comprising longitudinal members, transverse bands therefor said bands having pockets formed therein to receive said members, straps secured to said bands adjacent said pockets, and Wedging means arranged to react against said straps to effect clamping engagement between said parts throughout the area of contact.
3. A pole comprising longitudinal members, a transverse band therefor having pockets formed therein to receive said members, straps secured to said band adjacent said pockets and members With inclined sides Which react against said straps to clamp said members and said pocket portions throughout the area of contact.
4. A pole comprising U-shaped uprights, transverse bands having pockets formed therein to receive said uprights, straps secured to said bands adjacent said pockets, and Wedges arranged to react against said straps and said uprights to cause clamping engagement between said pockets and said uprights throughout the area of contact.
5. A pole comprising U-shaped uprights, transverse bands having pockets formed therein to receive said uprights straps secured to said bands adjacent said pockets said straps having centrally dished portions, and filling blocks having Wedge portions to co-act With said dished portions for the purpose set forth.
