UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MONTGOMERY SLEETH, OF WILMERDING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FORT PITT BEDDING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
BED-SPRING-SUPPORTING FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 29, 1909.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910. Serial No. 535,418.
the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved bed-spring-supporting frame, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawmg, in which Figure 1 is a cross-section of a bed-spring and its supporting frame having my invention applied thereto and showing the mannor of application to the rails of a bed-stead. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing a portion of the frame and the frame supporting members in different positions thereon. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views showing other forms of my invention.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, 1 represents the upper frame of a single section of a bedspring, and 2 the rectangular lower or spring supporting frame of the same provided with the cross-bars 3. Between the frames 1 and 2 are located the helical springs at, which are connected at their lower ends to the frame 2 and cross bars 3, and their upper ends are connected to the interwoven wires 5 carried by the frame 1.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the side bars 2 of the frame 2 are provided with slotted openings 2 within the same and the hangers or supporting members 6 are connected to such bars of said frame for engaging with the rails of the bed. These members 6 are preferably formed from flat or thin sheet metal by bending into an L-shaped form and have an inturned U-shaped hook-portion 7 at one end of the body portion 6 of the same provided with the lip 7, and a lip or flange portion 8 at the other end of the body portion 6 of the same, which flange extends out at right angles therefrom and in the same direction as such portion 7, such as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In applying the hangers 6 to the bars 2 of the frame 2, they are placed thereon by inserting the hooked ends 7 of the U-portion 7 in the slots 2" in said bars, as shown by the hanger at the upper part of Fig. 2, and then their opposite flanged ends 8 are swung outwardly therefrom, so that the body portion 6 will be in a vertical line with the inside of said bars and adjacent thereto and the body portion 6 will be in a horizontal plane below said bars, which will thereby allow the hook portion 7 to engage with the top edge of the bars and the lip portion 7 to free itself from said slots and be in a Vertical line with the outside of said bars and adjacent thereto. After this is done the hangers 6 are slid along the bars 2 of the frame 2 by their U-shaped portions 7, to a position out of line with the slots 2" in said bars, such as is shown in the lower part of Fig. 2, which will act to hold such hangers in the position desired for use in connection with the side rails 64 of metal bed, as shown in Fig. 1, by their body portions 6 fitting against the top of such rails and the flanges 8 thereon fitting against the outer sides of said rails.
It will be obvious that when the spring is to be packed, stored, or shipped, or when the same is used in connection with a wooden bed, that the hangers 6 can be removed from the bars 2 of the frame 2 by sliding. the same along said bars, so that the U-portions 7 thereon will register with the slots 2 in said bars, as shown in the upper part of Fig. 2, and then the body portion 6 of the hangers are swung inwardly, so that the lip portion 7 on said portion can be passed outwardly of said slots to free such hangers from the same and said bars.
In Fig. 3 the bars 2 of the frame 2 are shown as being provided with the recessed portions 9 in the upper side edges of the same, in which case the body portions 6 of the hangers 6 have an out-turned U-shaped portion 7, which is provided with a like shaped inturned portion 7 at its end, so that such portion 7 will fit within said recessed portion and around said bars in being placed on said bars, as shown by dotted lines in said figure, and then such hangers can be raised so that the hangers 6 can be slid along to allow the portion 7 thereon to engage with the upper side edges of said bars, as shown in full lines in said figure, which will thereby raise said hangers above the frame bars and permit the same to engage with the side rails of the bed. In re moving such hangers the portion 7 of the same are slid along to register with the recesses 9, which will allow said portion to drop down into said recesses, so that the hangers can then be lifted off the bars 2.
In Fig. at the same form of hanger is shown, as in Fig. 3 with the exception that the U-shaped portion 7" is dispensed with, and the out-turned U-shaped portion 7 is turned inwardly toward the body portion 6 to form the spring portion 7 in which case such hanger in being placed in position is snapped around the bar 2 to hold the same in place for engaging with the rails of a bed by such portion 7 fitting under said bars and the portion 7 bearing against the inner faces of said bars, and if desired, said hanger can be slid along said bar to the position desired. A lip portion 7 can be formed on the spring portion 7 for fitting within a recess 7 formed on the inner face of said bars to further assist in holding the hanger in place. In removing such hanger from the bars 2 the U-shaped portion 7 thereon is forced down from said bars, so
that the spring portion 7* will be disengaged from the bars and thereby free the h anger therefrom.
Various other modifications and changes in the design and construction of the device may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will thus be seen that my improved bedspring-supporting frame will enable the supporting members to be readily and quickly connected to and removed from the frame, and such members can be applied to springs formed in one or more sections, while at the same time such members when in position will form a stiff and rigid connection with the bed and will not be liable to become displaced when set in position for supporting the spring upon the bed.
IV hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In means for applying a support to bedsprings. the combination of a bed-spring supporting frame formed of bars provided with openings therein, and removable hangers adapted to be slid-ably connected to said bars by said openings through a swinging movement.
In testimony whereof, I, the said Mom GOMERY SL'EE'LH, have hereunto set my hand.
MONTGOMERY SLEETH.
