Letters Patent N6. 96,879, dated November 16, 1869; antedat ed November 10, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SNOW-SHQVEL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that L'Gsonen W. BROWN, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snow-Shovels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to 'the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view.
This invention includes means for cutting two sides of acubical block of snow, or other soft substance, at one stroke, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable those skilled in'the art to make and use my invention, I now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Similar letters in the drawings refer to like parts. --A represents an ordinary shovel-blade.
a represents a cutter, of similar material, attache by rivets, or other suitable means, to either side of the blade A, at'the lower corner thereof, or at the lower corners of both sides, if desired, and projecting from such blade at right angles; or, if there be a need of giving the blocks other than a cubical shape, the cutter base of which forms the cutting-edge, and the perpendicular, the edge at which it is joined to the blade A. This form combines cutter and brace in one piece.
If desired, however, the cutter a may have paralleledges, and to its outer end a brace may be attached, running thence to the handle 0, diagonally with respect to the blade A. Or the brace may extend upward perpendicularly to the cutter a, to the height of the blade A, and thence to the handle 0, at right angles to its former direction, but diagonally with respect to the blade A.
A cubical block of snow may conveniently be removed from the main mass by cutting it on four sides. With my improved shovel this may be done at two motions, a vertical and horizontal, whereas four motions of an ordinary shovel are required to effect the same result. A saving of two motions is therefore wrought by my improvement in cutting each block.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
The cutter a, so attached to the shovel-blade A, by means of soft rivets or screws, that the cutter may be removed when the shovel is required for uses other than shovellingsnow.
' GEORGE W. BROWN.
