IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, EDWIN BENNETT, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and State of llIaryland, have invented certain Improvements in Fruit-Preserving J ars, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to the production of an airtight joint between the month-edge of a glass or incorrodible glazed-ware vessel, and the cover or lid of the same material, by making the upper edge of the mouth of the vessel and the upper surface of the rim of the lid or cover to meetin close contact or proximity together, in the same horizontal plane, whilst the under side of the rim of the said lid rests in an annular recess around inthc inner side ot'themouth otthe said vessel; and then covering the annular joint thus produced between them, by an elasticair-proot'ring pressed firmly-down upon the upper snriaces of the two approximated parts, by means of a clamping-screw cap, or otherwise, so as to cover the said annularjoint perfectly air-tight, the object of my invention being to present n gl. or glazed-ware surface over the whole interior or fruit-side oi the covering, and thus prevent the fruittrom coming into contact with the elastic ring, or becoming etl'ected either in flavor or quality by any part of the said interior surface or covering, as well as to make the vessel air-tight Description of the Accompanying Dru-wings.
General Description.
A is a. glass or glazed-ware jar, having a short neck or elevated mouth, a, the outer side of which latter is screw-cut, its upper edge made flat and even, and its inner side, from the said upper edge to the depth of about a quarter of an inch, more or less, recessed by a sloping-sided groove, 2.
.The. lid B is made to tit accurately in the sloped recess 2, and of such a thickness around about its edge as will cause the upper surface of the same to come nto the same horizontal plane withthe surface of the upper edge of the mouth of the jar, when the said li is applied.
()n the upper side of the lid 15 there is a raised portion, I), which forms a continuous abutment or shoulder around, and at; a short distance from the outer edge of the said lid, as shown in ii". 1.
The ring 0 is of vulcanized gum-elastic, rectangular in its transverse section, fits around the raised portion 1), when applied upon the flat, even surfaces of both the top edge of the mouth of the jar A and the lid B, and covers the annular joint between thcm, thc out side diameter of the said ring 0 also corresponding with the outside diameter of the mouth-edge of the jar, and its thickness or depth being about twice the height of the raised portion or abutment I) of the lid, (see fig. 1.)
The clamping-screw cap is made in the usual form, open at its top, and of such a depth as will allow it to be screwed down around the neck ot'the jar, far enough to cause its tlungcd top to compress the elastic ring (l sutiicientl; to make. the annular joint, between the lid and the edge of the month of ihejar, air-tight, substantially as represented in lig. l, which figure represents the jar closed air-tight, as intemdcd.
It will be readily seen that; this is a very simplyoperated and reliable jar for preserving fresh fruits,
vegetables, &c., in as pure and perfect a state aswhon C lai m I claim, as my invention A vitreous or earthen jar, provided with an annular interior recess in its neck, and a cover fitting therein,
the annular'joint between the neck and cover being covered by a packing-ring, held to duty by a scrcwcap or similar clamping and retainingalcvice, substan- I tially as described.
